Russia has called for "a 100% guarantee that no-one would think about Ukraine joining Nato", President Vladimir Putin's spokesman has told the BBC. Dmitri Peskov added that Nato's gradual approach towards Russia's borders had made Moscow "nervous".
Earlier, Mr Putin said the US would never "subdue" Russia over Ukraine.
In a televised meeting earlier, Mr Putin told a group of pro-Kremlin activists that the US wanted "to subdue us, solve their problems at our expense. They want to dominate and influence". To applause he added: "No-one in history ever managed to achieve this with Russia, and no-one ever will."
Mr Putin said that US and EU sanctions against Russia ran contrary to these countries' own interests and that Russia - whose currency is suffering because of the sanctions - would see a boost in its industries.

Finland, which also borders Russia, belongs to the EU but not to NATO. I don't see why Ukraine can't do the same.
I suppose that is the reverse of Kruschev's "We will bury you." This one is "You will not bury us."
Who knows if this spokesperson's statement is real or just a trial balloon or what Putin is willing offer in exchange for Ukraine agreeing not to join NATO. If Ukraine is free to integrate with Europe that seems to be what its people want. The prospect of NATO membership should be negotiable.

I'm not willing to risk a nuclear war for anything going on in Ukraine. Are you? I'm still wondering at the justification for the US being involved at all, never mind as a leading player in the conflict. Where's the national interest in this?

(31,974 posts)No way is it going to step into that mess. NATO's purpose is pretty much a post WW II institution and Europe is not in a post WW II mindset anymore. Most NATO countries have very small militaries and can't really do much to help anybody.
