SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) --
A San Francisco man is recovering from multiple stab wounds after he was attacked in the Tenderloin District while defending his girlfriend from catcalling and lewd comments.
The wounds on Ben Schwartz's face and neck show how violently he was cut and these aren't his most serious injuries.
"It barely missed my spinal cord in the back by just a few inches, so luckily this wheelchair is not permanent, thank God," he said. "I punctured my right lung from behind."
Schwartz was stabbed nine times Saturday morning walking home from a friend's house, with his girlfriend. They were near Larkin and Ellis streets when he said a man started catcalling and making obscene comments.
"At first we tried to just ignore it, just kind of walk away and make our way home, cross the street and try to take a different path," he said.

(8,791 posts)keep your head down and keep walking, not play hero. Lots of drugs, people with guns (shooting are fairly common) and violence and vagrants, shady characters in that neighborhood.

(36,437 posts)Used to walk down Larkin on Saturday mornings to go to the library.
Lots of Vietnamese restaurants. Also, lots of tweakers and folks who will stab your ass. Most of them, you give them a strong look and they back off. But some...? Yes, they will stab your ass.
Not noted here is that there are lots of grimy strip clubs around there. Not the flashy North Beach versions, but the real shitty Tenderloin. Isn't the O'Farrell Theater just a block away?

(21,675 posts)are very common in SF. I doubt that was the reason for the assault. More likely it was about the location where it happened.
