(PINE RIDGE)-(AP) - The mother of an 8-year-old girl killed by a pack of dogs on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation says Jayla Rodriguez dreamed of one day creating a shelter for the dogs that roam the reservation.
Mother Danielle Griffith says that she is starting the Jayla Marie Rodriguez Memorial Fund in honor of that dream. She thinks an animal shelter might help prevent another tragedy.
Jayla was killed while she was sledding last Tuesday. Oglala Sioux officials have since rounded up and killed dozens of dogs.
The Tribal Council also decided at a special meeting on Saturday to spend $200,000 crafting and enforcing laws to address the problem of roaming dogs. Final approval could come at the council's regular meeting on Tuesday.

OP
Even if they can't get all the dogs in a shelter it would be good if they could do TNR

Jayla's mother to do this. Like you, I wonder if I could.

so the population would eventually dwindle.

snip
80-90 stray dogs rescued in the past week is a good start. Good for KC Willis and Light Shine Canine!

Willis adds they are not trying to rescue aggressive dogs. Willis says, in the last seven days Light Shine Canine has rescued between eighty and ninety stray dogs. Willis adds that tribal government allowed her to rescue some of the dogs that had already been captured
(Listen to story for soundbite)
The rescued dogs are all placed in foster homes in various states.

(56,177 posts)4. Amazes me when there are so many stray dogs...
Cats, yeah, because they're secertive and you don't know they're there...but when dogs get to be such big numbers, it has to have been going on for quite some time.
I hope the little girl is at peace.

(12,153 posts)6. It has been going on for
a long time. I know that as far back as 50 years ago people from other places have been dumping off their unwanted dogs on the reservation to either fend for themselves or die if no one takes them in. Of course, dog owners on the res neglect and sometimes abandon their own dogs too.
