but they did teach me how to learn and for that I'm forever indebted.

They taught me how to get away with plagiarism; although
I swear it started and ended with Encyclopedia Britannica
in 12th grade.

They taught me never to stand up and speak in front of
others, as you will most certainly be humiliated and
punished. (That one took a long time to unlearn.)

They taught me that people don't listen very carefully,
and even when they do, they usually misunderstand,
and often will criticize or punish what they imagine they
have heard. Sadly, this is kind of true.

I could go on and on.. but please know I had exceptionally
horrific and cruel teachers, year after year. There were
good exceptions. I learned that sometimes a science teacher
who looks like he is in the Mafia will have a good heart and
give everybody a passing grade.

As my one local adult kid and I planned our Thanksgiving meal, I jokingly suggested we fill all the empty seats at the dining table with photos of absent family members.
