By Rick Couri
HOUSTON, Tx The daughter of 93-year-old Olivia Blair couldnt believe it when Fourth Missionary Baptist Church pastor Walter Houston refused to bury her mother.
It was like the last insult in the world, Barbara Day told KRIV in Houston. Day said her only wish was for her mother to be buried in the church that she loved and worshiped all of her life, even as a little girl.
Day explained her mother was a church member for 50 years but had been sick for nearly a decade, and in a coma for the last 24 months.
Preacher watchdog Tyrone Jacques met with Houston and asked him to reconsider. KRIV writes, in that meeting Houston refused, telling him Blair was, no longer a member of the church because she had not supported it financially in the last 10 years.

(15,377 posts)That the two criteria that I use to instantly judge if a church is about enriching the pastor(s) instead of actually about being a church (even if I don't agree with its particular theology slant) can be found around the Houston neighborhood that the church is in:
1. They have billboards advertising themselves
2. The pastor's smiling face is featured heavily on them.
The first one will normally give me pause. The second one always seals the deal (especially when not just one pastor is featured on it but a husband-wife pastoral team is).

(5,857 posts)one years dues in arrears when my grandfather was buried. Jewish synagogues generally have a membership fee rather than tithes. Although the board of directors can (and do) give a large number of scholarships or reduced fees to many members unable to afford the dues. My synagogue has dues of $250 / month.
