I am spending it with family and friends, even though some of them drive me up the wall.
I know there is a lot of hostility directly related to the decision by the Grand Jury to not indict Wilson.
We are DU, though, and we come together as friends.
I love all of you, and wish the best during the holiday.

(39,961 posts)Yours sounds like a blast!
It is about coming together and loving each other.
For me, I like cooking and eating fantastic dishes - I try to make something a little different every year along with the staples of turkey, dressing and mashed potatoes.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)It isn't Thanksgiving without it.
What isn't Thanksgiving without in your household, food wise?

(22,250 posts)too many desserts..
when I was growing up it was my mother's amazing corn bread dressing
Aerows
(39,961 posts)I don't care for cornbread dressing, complete with the eggs and roasted giblets.
It's not a Southern household without it, though. I don't cook it, I don't eat it, and I just evade it "Don't you want to try it?" every year.
Oyster dressing is a different story.

(39,961 posts)Is green bean casserole. My who is my aunt because she is an absolute hoot when she gets a couple of glasses of wine in her, and then we sneak around out back to gossip and have a smoke.
Nobody is supposed to smoke, my aunt least of, but we still steal around the corner and do it anyway

Then there is Uncle Melvin's fried chicken.
My wife's people. A vast extended-family potluck. Last year was a small turnout, only 75 people came. The year before was 94, I was the official counter.
maybe some home-made corn liquor, too.

(39,961 posts)is white potato pie. If it is as delicious and savory (not sweet) as what I am thinking of, it will likely be standing room only and the potato pie gone in seconds!

(39,961 posts)That sounds like heavenly potatoes and I'd probably just lurk by the bowl of it like a vagrant potato lover.

(39,961 posts)Turkey, green bean casserole, oyster dressing and mashed potatoes with glorious turkey gravy.
Good conversation with loved ones (even though they irritate you during the rest of the year), great food, and a whole lot of hugs.
Here's a hug for you, too, Rex. I hope you have a wonderful dinner and day tomorrow!

(16,327 posts)She always makes a turkey leg for herself and I eat enchiladas. Must eat foods are old family favorites -- Stilton stuffed celery, home marinated olives, chips & dip, crescent rolls, mashed potatoes, canned cranberry sauce -- very mid-western, very old school.
Enjoy your feast tomorrow!
Aerows
(39,961 posts)Are you referring to the phenomenal, most delicious cheese in the world Stilton? Or something else? It all sounds delicious and I love celery, but I'm not clear on what Stilton stuffing is comprised.
Hell Hath No Fury
(16,327 posts)with mayo until it is creamy then "stuff" a stalk of celery with the mixture. Our family loves it but it tends to disgust people who weren't raised eating it.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)but if it was mashed up with sour cream and put on a celery stick, you couldn't keep me out of it!

(22,250 posts)I am required to bring the hot rolls and a chocolate pound cake. My husband is making his legendary Pina Colada Ice Cream
After we eat the ice cream nobody will care if the Cowboys win or lose

(7,720 posts)who with his wife graciously hosted a huge, extended family Thanksgiving. The biggest group had 63 people and I made 35 lbs. of mashed potatoes. The average settled down to about 20 to 25 lbs. of potatoes. Since the cousin has decided to host every other year, I'm down to about 5 lbs. of mashed potatoes. I might do more fir leftovers.
Here is a tip about leftover sage/bread cube stuffing. Last year I reheated the leftover stuffing in a waffle iron. Gravy on top is better than any waffle inthe morning with syrup.

(10,133 posts)We're moving Thanksgiving to December because of family conflicts among friends, but we'll have a smaller dinner tomorrow. My Alabamian husband insists on cornbread stuffing, a week-long process (well, I make the cornbread a week in advance so it has time to get stale), and USDA be damned, I cook it in the turkey.
My runner-up favorites are sweet potatoes and leftovers.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)sandwiches with a side of stuffing and mashed potatoes is pretty much the lunch of the gods.

(19,564 posts)Luckily my family who are RW know they're out numbered and keep their mouths shut. None of the the majority of my family speak of political things (or religion) on the holidays, so no rightist get upset either. That's what I love about my leftist family members, they're kind and don't do the ganging up thing. There are 363 (adding in Christmas) other days of the year to show your ass, why choose to do it on the one when your great grandmother/father/aunt/uncle/yourself may be experiencing their last holiday? That's just too nasty for words!
For those not so fortunate, my love and wishes for peace tomorrow. I've been there before and I won't go there again. Personally, I'd just stay home and beg off I had the flu or something if I thought it was going to devolve into a crapfest, even when I'm not actively involved. Who has time in their lives for that kind of mess? The family members who pull that crap should just not be invited for the peace of the majority of the family.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)even seeing relatives you don't agree with can be overcome with generous helpings of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and all the other trimmings.
I LOVE Thanksgiving dinner enough that I turn a blind eye and develop hearing problems in the presence of all the goodness .

(1,301 posts)Seriously.
Our children are siblings, and we've always spent holidays together. Sounds strange, I know, but it works. We're family.
I'm bringing vegan duplicates of dishes that will probably already be there: mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, gravy, plus lentil loaf, herbed brussel sprouts and a wild rice pilaf. My daughter is baking a couple of desserts. My husband and I are vegetarian and my daughter, her boyfriend, and another friend coming, are all vegan.
So we are untraditional on all counts. Can't wait!

(5,644 posts)even though some drove me crazy, what I wouldn't give to spend another one with them. The last of my mothers siblings (six months older than I) died in May of this year, and now they are all gone.
Remembering the fight I had with my mothers brother...yes my uncle. He kept teasing her about what ever it was that made her cry, I don't remember what it was. So I went over there to punch him and I got one in. He held onto both my wrist and wouldn't let go and he started laughing at me. My mother started crying again and saying why couldn't we be a nice normal happy family like others. My mother was the matriarch of the family for at least 60 years, after her mother passed at an early age.
The stupid arguments we would have. *smh* I miss all of them.
