Heard at Thanksgiving Dinner - "Why is President Obama letting those people riot?" *sigh*

Nothing like sitting at dinner smiling as relatives recite Fox News talking points like they are original thought. I did egg them on a bit by saying, "I know! He is black. He could stop them if he wanted." At which point, another relative chimed in, "Well, he is only half black," and then I sarcastically responded, "That is true, perhaps the collective mind control is diluted!"

The sad thing I was trying to be outrageously sarcastic, yet in their Fox News world, it seemed like a perfectly reasonable take.

There truly is an alternate RW universe that some people live in where you can be perfectly racist, but the only thing that can be called racist is when you call it out, because then you are throwing the "race card." Up is down and left is right in the corporate media fueled alternative universe.

When (not so) Breitbart screwed up that AG nominee's name with someone else.

In Media Matters, in the comments about one story, a RW troll cited a "source."

just my wife (an Anarcho-Communist) and me (Marxist-Leninist).

I grew up in the type of family setting you're describing, so your rendition brought back some real memories. (Mine were more like "Well, Hitler wasn't really THAT bad, you know?" followed by lots of hemming and hawing about how the "left-wing media" did a hit-job on Der Fuhrer.)

my wife and I met (cliche though it may be) in a bar. That was about 13 years ago, as the crow flies (married 10 and a 1/2 years and still going strong).

There are times people should not admit the truth. Ok; these are people you know. Do you think they will get better on their own? Challenge them, and if not successful drown yourself in the Gravy. Take no prisoners and be no slave.

Most of their ideas smell like they spent some time in the GAS chamber..

Their rank and file seem for the most part like the man with the hoe without the hoe.

I can't decide if they're putting me on by parroting Fixed News' jibber-jabber or if they're being willfully ignorant & small.

Republican ideas which they call principals are not original. In addition, they do not serve the same purpose as true ideas. An idea, even a well accepted idea such as the laws of physics or the theory of evolution can never be considered as proved. They are a sort of analogy of reality which helps people to reason their way to further knowledge. If we can safely take something as an axiom is no reason to consider it as fact.
Republican idea are not used to further thought, but as settled conclusions. For example, early in the last century people tried repeatedly to democratically limit the working hours of bakers in NYC to 60 hours per week. Repeatedly, the courts turned this down in favor of a right of contract, and laissez faire economics. Later Courts said it had nothing to do with contracts, and looked in vain for a right of contract in the Constitution, and then found that the legislature had the power to legislate in defense of health and safety of its citizens.
It is not just that the rank and file take their unproved economic assumption as settled fact, but their representatives, and judges, as well. The democrats are accused of social engineering, but they simply act on their morality. The republicans act on their false principals, and they have engineered the economic failure this society is rapidly becoming. Capitalism only works well in theory.
In the face of the failure of their principals, the republicans do what all tyrannies of the idea do: They blame the imperfection of humanity. Humanity is what it is, and it is easier to correct false principals than humanity.

a better question is why isn't the police but they are the reason why the riots are occuring in the first place.
