I skim freeperville from time to time to because I think it is representative of a deep sickness in the republican party and this country. Years ago, the conventional DU wisdom was that the denizens of said site were extreme outliers in the party. I think it's indicative of how far to the right the party has moved since the advent of the tea party. In fact, I think one could argue that the tea party has succeeded in a hostile takeover of the republican party.

(12,041 posts)Free Republic itself is a dying site, they have purged a lot of their old people and their software has not stayed up with the times which makes it far more difficult to attract new people. While Free Republic itself is dying, the Freeper mentality exists on other sites all throughout the internet. Look at the comments on practically any site on the internet and you will see them, there are even a few pretty obvious ones here at DU. Freepers are no longer limited to Free Republic they are all over the internet, and yes they are very influential within the GOP.
