Meet Anders Breivik’s American Pen Pal

“I dream of meeting Breivik,” 23-year-old Kevin Forts told a Norwegian tabloid.
By Anoosh Chakelian | @anooshchakelian | April 20, 2012

With each passing day, Norwegian mass killer Anders Breivik appears increasingly remorseless and smug during his ongoing trial for the murders of 77 people, and with each passing day the crimes he’s accused of look even more reprehensible. It is most people’s idea of a nightmare even to be in the same room as the murderous extremist.

-------

Meet 23-year-old Kevin Forts of Worcester, Mass., who says it is his “dream” to meet the fanatical right-wing killer and that he agrees with his “cause” of fighting “cultural Marxism and the Islamization of Norway.”

In this videotaped interview with a reporter from Norwegian tabloid VG, Forts calls Breivik’s bombing of government offices in Oslo and the systematic executions of 69 people at a youth camp on the nearby island of Utoya a “necessary political sacrifice.” The deliberate killing of small children, he says, was “atrocious but necessary” in that it raised awareness for his cause.

In February, Forts became so fascinated with the jailed Breivik that he began to send him letters as a way of “showing him support,” — rather than sending Breivik money, which he apparently declined to do after finding it would be redirected to a fund for the victims. According to Der Spiegel, even Breivik himself was surprised at this American’s support, and wrote him a reply saying: “I am absolutely interested in discussing ideological issues with you and am thinking about how we can work together.”

Good thing this young man will be able to legally buy whatever weapons he desires in America with a simple criminal background check. #TooManyNazis

Furthermore, I really question turning this into a gun control thing. I mean you do realize that Breivik lives in a country with strict
gun control laws, right?

Yes, in Norway rifle magazine clips are limited to three rounds. Breivik ordered his from the States: http://thinkprogress.org/security/2011/07/28/282174/breivik-gun-clips-united-states/

Some other European countries require psychological/police interview of some form before allowing gun purchase: Poland (every 5 years), Czech Republic (in some cases), Germany (under age 25), Romania, Britain (police permit), Japan (police permit)

Anders Breivik didn't kill all those people with a rock, neither did Jared Lee Loughner, nor Seung-Hui Cho...

This is a right-wing terrorism issue, but it is also a gun issue. Like the whole Zimmerman race v. guns debate, this isn't an either or question.

If you're suggesting that Breivik couldn't have killed that many people without a gun, think again.

They do state and federal bkgrnd checks. When they see who his friends are my bet is that he will be denied. He can't buy guns or ammo in the state without a license.

I wish the interviewer had asked "What if *your* child was one of the victims?"

9. He's awaiting trial for assault and battery of his girlfriend

not that it's particularly surprising:

Renee Buisson, executive director of public affairs for the college, said in an email late yesterday afternoon that Mr. Forts would “not be on the Assumption College campus for the foreseeable future,” and that his conduct regarding the interview and an alleged assault earlier this year were under administrative review. She said she could not say whether he would graduate.

In February, Mr. Forts was charged by Assumption College police with assault and battery after an alleged confrontation with his girlfriend on campus. According to court records, he allegedly grabbed the woman during an argument over a dinner invitation to Mr. Forts' parents' house. The case is pending in Central District Court, where a not guilty plea was entered at Mr. Forts' arraignment on Feb. 21.

Thanks for posting. Interesting to see how people react to someone like this:

Frank C. D'Elia, who has lived at 8 Ruthen Circle for more than 30 years, said he was particularly bothered by Mr. Forts' support of the unprovoked killings by Mr. Breivik because April 19 is the 17th anniversary of Timothy McVeigh's bombing in Oklahoma City, which killed 168 people and injured more than 800.

Mr. D'Elia said his two children are graduates of Assumption College. Mr. Forts' sister has baby-sat for his granddaughter, he said.

“He (Mr. Breivik) took innocent lives. How you can support that is beyond me being an American citizen. It's just incomprehensible. The children killed in that Scandinavian country, what did they do to deserve that? The price they paid was for somebody else's philosophy,” Mr. D'Elia said. “It just goes to show you that you can have a neighbor and not realize what their philosophy is growing up.

“Our soldiers are dying all over the world for him to be able to go to school and have freedom of speech. Not to become a vigilante,” Mr. D'Elia continued.
