Two weeks ago, Cleveland police killed Tanisha Anderson in front of her family's home when they'd been called by her family to help her, after she panicked as they were taking her to a local hospital for a psychological evaluation. Her 16-year-old daughter was watching from a window [1] as an officer used a takedown move on her mother, forcing Anderson face down on the icy pavement and then pressing his knee into her back until she stopped moving.
The police told concerned family members that Tanisha Anderson was sleeping and left her there on the ground. When the ambulance finally arrived 20 minutes later, she was dead. Once again, an African American family was reminded that no level of government in the United States is set up to protect and serve the well-being of their loved ones, no matter where they choose to live.
Tanisha Anderson's family can't afford her funeral expenses, and as of now, they've only raised $1,501 of their $7,000 goal. Can you help them today?

(10,597 posts)It's the skin color. Plain and simple. I can't give much, but will give what I can. Someone among us needs to come out for that God and Country-forsaken family. If I had the money, I'd pay the whole damn thing. Deepest condolences to the family.

How police can avoid shooting the mentally ill
(CNN) -- In the past two weeks, police have killed at least four people with psychiatric disabilities, each of whom had a weapon. Most recently, police in St. Louis shot Kajieme Powell, killing him just a few miles from Ferguson, Missouri.
Powell is black and his death initially ratcheted up tensions, but people have since seemed to accept police explanations. Powell acted erratically, had a knife and refused to put it down. Mental illness made it, in the eyes of many, a sad but unpreventable situation.
In cases like these, we need to stop talking about mental illness and start thinking through the implications of psychiatric disabilities. We also need police whose first instinct is to de-escalate tense situations whenever and however possible, and, when necessary, solve confrontations with the absolute minimum amount of force.

(10,597 posts)... she was a black woman. Should the family have called 911 for an ambulance, if she was known to be mentally ill?

(26,280 posts)if she was violent and we would be right back where we are which is that the police training for dealing with the mentally ill is inadequate.

(10,597 posts)... if we can use tranquilizer guns on animals, whey can they not be used on humans who are mentally disturbed and dangerous? Actually, that kind of person needs to be in a mental institution, but since we have such a fucked up health care system, that won't happen. What a mess.

(26,280 posts)or in some cases just backing down to let the person time to cool down if no one is in immediate danger.
Also providing outpatient mental health treatment plus more facilities for those cases where outpatient treatment isnt a good choice are needed.
