Disappointed DU is being used to oppose the Earned Income Tax Credit

(at least when it results in tax refunds to families with children)

44% of children live in low income families.
21% of children live in poor families.

The Democratic thing to do is to help those in need and support things that provide needed resources.

Earned Income Tax Credit:

The United States federal earned income tax credit or earned income credit (EITC or EIC) is a refundable tax credit for low- and medium-income individuals and couples, primarily for those who have qualifying children. When the credit exceeds the amount of taxes owed, it results in a tax refund to those who qualify and claim the credit. That is, this credit is refundable. This tax credit is provided, in part, to offset the burden of social security taxes and to maintain an incentive to work.[1] It has also been part of political debates regarding whether to raise the minimum wage or whether to increase the earned income credit[citation needed], with the EIC being targeted to persons and couples taking care of children (with parents receiving preference over other family members).

...

Enacted in 1975, the initially modest EIC has been expanded by tax legislation on a number of occasions, including the widely-publicized Reagan Tax Reform Act of 1986, and was further expanded in 1990, 1993, and 2001, regardless of whether the act in general raised taxes (1990, 1993), lowered taxes (2001), or eliminated other deductions and credits (1986).[6]

It is a very successful program to help lift people out of poverty. What is wrong with that?

most comments were in support ,also by people WITHOUT children ,so the anti- child meme, is uncalled for.

Not admitting that the main reason people need that money is because they are doing their part in keeping the society going by agreeing to the grueling decades long process that is raising children in this country.

I put my twenty years in so there.

I have 2 of my own and I adopted 2. Are you saying that giving me the EITC for my adopted children is "subsidizing overpopulation"?

I can barely afford to take care of my family. I adopted 2 kids, one with MD and one with Autism. Should I be excluded for those two because I took in two kids that no one else wanted? The only "help" we get is from the MD Association, beyond that we take care of everything ourselves, so tell me again, why exactly, I should be penalized for having 4 kids.

Didn't even know that people without kids living in the home were eligible for this. The IRS caught it and added it to my refund. At issue was $3-$4K earned working for the census.

many hold the same beliefs as conservatives yet still call them them-self's democrat.

The down side of the big tent.

If one does not back and support the party platform 100% then why be a member of the party?

Just my two cents.

I'd rather focus on getting the private sector to pull its own weight. But, until then, I don't have a better idea.

Some people, simply put, are assholes who feel a need to act morally superior because of the way they choose to live their lives. Always has been that way, always will be. But I'll never pass up the opportunity to tell them to fuck themselves.
