Sen. Elizabeth Warren will be the keynote speaker at a summit hosted by labor giant AFL-CIO early next year on wages — a critical issue that’s expected to play a defining role in the national discussion ahead of the 2016 presidential race.

The Massachusetts Democrat will be the featured speaker at the union’s first National Summit on Wages on January 7 at Gallaudet University in Washington — giving her a platform in front of a core Democratic base constituency with whom her message about income inequality has resonated.

Warren has repeatedly said she isn’t running for president. But her strong support among progressives has made her a wished-for Democratic 2016 candidate, and she has made clear she plans to continue to shape the debate about the party’s economic priorities.

Richard Trumka, the AFL-CIO president who told the New York Times after the Democrats’ disastrous midterms that he hopes to see Hillary Clinton run on a platform focused on raising wages and that she won’t “cater to Wall Street,” praised Warren in a statement.

She can push the age and of higher minimum wage laws, and force those who do run go address this issue.
