[big] Gun Makes Men Look Taller And Stronger, Air Force Study Shows[/big]
Source: Huffington Post
With gun in hand, a man of any size appears bigger, an altered notion that probably occurs at a subconscious level, a new study suggests.
The research, funded by the U.S. Air Force, reveals a seemingly simple mechanism that was even in the brains of Neanderthals, and possibly common even to chimpanzees, to measure whether they would win or lose a fight with an aggressor.
"There's nothing about the knowledge that gunpowder makes lead bullets fly through the air at damage-causing speeds that should make you think that a gun-bearer is bigger or stronger, yet you do," lead study author Daniel Fessler, an associate professor of anthropology at UCLA, said in a statement. "Danger really does loom large in our minds."

The GD SOP:
Discuss politics, issues, and current events. No posts about Israel/Palestine, religion, guns, showbiz, or sports unless there is really big news. No conspiracy theories. No whining about DU.
In my opinion 'NO CATS' should be added to the SOP

[big] Weekly Address: It's Time for Congress to Pass the Buffett Rule[/big]
In this weeks address, President Obama urged Congress to pass the Buffett Rule, a principle of fairness that says if you make more than $1 million a year, you should pay at least the same percentage of your income in taxes as middle class families. Meanwhile, if you make under $250,000 a year like 98 percent of American families do your taxes shouldnt go up. The President has been pushing Congress to pass the Buffett rule to help ensure we have a system thats fair, where everyone plays by the same set of rules and we can continue to make the investments we need to grow our economy and help the middle class and those trying to get in it.

[big]3 brazilian citizens are arrested for murder and cannibilism.[/big]
Sao Paolo, Brazil (CNN) -- Brazilian police have arrested three people suspected of killing at least two women, eating parts of their bodies and using their remains to make stuffed meat pies sold in the northeastern town of Garanhuns.
The three suspects, 51-year-old Jorge Beltrao Negroponte, his wife and his mistress were arrested Wednesday and have confessed to the crimes, police told national television. The female suspects were not identified.
Interviewed behind bars, Negroponte told SBT Television that he followed the instructions of voices in his head.
"I did certain things for purification, to protect people and deliver them to God," he told SBT on Sunday.

[big]What's in your disaster-box?[/big]
We always had one by the basement steps when we lived in Kansas, and now we have a different kind since we live in earthquake country.
A good tornado box has:
battery operated radio
flashlights
extra batteries
water
medicines needed for chronic conditions
extra pair of glasses
heavy leather boots
(lots of prickly debris everywhere)
some cash (debit cards may not work due to power outages)
rubber galoshes to go OVER the boots
(rubber soles are good to have when power lines & rain meet up)
helmet of some kind..
(we never had these, but I would certainly include them now)
sturdy raincoat
pet crates nearby
Food other than snacks is not such an issue, since tornadoes are spotty and rarely take all food away, and once the immediate danger is over, there is alwasy somewhere to eat (unless it's one like Greensburg)

[big] Well, MY day is off to a ROTTEN start. The servants missed some oil spots in the car elevator![/big]
I went out to elevator #3 this morning...it's a sunny day, so I decided I wanted to ride to work in the Maserati with the top down. I felt my foot slide a little and looked down and what did I see on the sole of my freshly-shined Bruno Maglis? OIL! I was FURIOUS! I called the servants together for an emergency meeting and none of them would admit to this unforgivable oversight. After a while, my anger subsided and I told them that "mistakes will happen," and then I docked them each a week's pay. You know what that means...today it's a round of golf and a thick, juicy steak...on my servants! Does life GET any better than THIS?
Start packin!

[big] 93. BE CAREFUL ------DISSENT IS NOT ALLOWED [/big]
Thank you for YOUR support.
I'm 56 years old, I have been fired for being gay (decades ago), have been hospitalized for a week in a gay bashing (decades ago), have 45 dead friends from AIDS, have been arrested three times in civil disobedience fighting for gay rights (at the White House, Supreme Court and DC City Council), have been published in National publications including dozens of articles and letters in the NY Times, Greenwich Times , Washington Post, Washington Times, Newsweek, Esquire and others), attended the 'War Conference' in 1987 (I believe) where national Coming Out Day was conceived (and later taken over by the Advocate Experience and then HRC) attended the first World AIDS Day at the United Nations (with all of 26 people attended) which was conceived by my first lover now dead who worked at the United Nations and have given my time and money to fight for te GLBT community. That is and will be my legacy when I die and I'm proud of it.
I consider it sad that a GLBT 'administrator' thinks I am the enemy all because I disagree with him based on what he read in TWO posts (that's right ...TWO posts that asked for TOLERANCE)....all while his allies complain about DU and how it treats the GLBT community.
Skinner, stop apologizing to any HOMOsexual who knows nothing of tolerance. I'm so tired of some HOMOsexuals complaining about DU and anyone who disagrees with them. I will not be silenced by someone who is so clueless about how and what we fought for. What does it say about the GLBT forum when GLBT rights is arguably the most important thing in my life and it is truly of little interest to me because it's so 'safe' as to be meaningless (how few of my thousands of posts are made there). Let me know when tolerance prevails. That's what I fought for and is so clearly denied in the GLBT forum.
They are too busy scrubbing the pages they have no idea what we have fought for. Ironically, I had to go another board (this board) to post what I was BANNED from saying.

I'm the son of a single mother and I grew up in extreme poverty. Despite that, I went to a private school and became top of my class. I oversaw the construction of both Death Stars, a weapon of unbelievable destruction, and witnessed the destruction of one Death Star in my TIE fighter while I tried to kill (unknown to me at the time) my son. I squashed a rebel base on Hoth, destroyed the Jedi, murdering men, women AND children; and enabled a lowly senator from Naboo to become the Emperor of the galaxy. I married young, which ended in separation. I have two children, twins, and several grandchildren. I killed my best friend a long, long time ago but now we hang out as ghosts, surfing the internets.

That warranted revocation of his posting privileges.
Because, while he may have annoyed many here, he also seemed a good Democrat and occasionally posted actual substantive material.

To those annoyed by him, those same people COULD HAVE availed themselves of the the IGNORE and HIDE features.
I fear that this was a case of bullying, members wanting to see him go put enough pressure on the system to force the issue.
Or there might be something we all don't know about.

[big] Newt Gingrich Bitten By Penguin At St. Louis Zoo[/big]
Source: huffingtonpost
ST. LOUIS At least one penguin at the St. Louis Zoo appears to be a feisty opponent of Newt Gingrich.
The Republican presidential candidate is sporting a small bandage on his finger after getting nipped by a small penguin during his tour of the zoo on Friday. Gingrich was in St. Louis to speak during the National Rifle Association's annual meeting.
During his visit to the popular zoo in Forest Park, he was treated to a behind-the-scenes visit with two Magellanic penguins. One of them nipped Gingrich on the finger.

For fifteen years, the Wizard of the cesspool FreeRepublic has been beyond adamant that his little sewer would never -never- adopt an advertising, pay, or membership model. Well, what have we here?
... the beginning of the end? One can but hope.
"Alternatives to donor based, ie, freepathon business model"
April 19, 2012 | Jim Robinson
Posted on Thursday, April 19, 2012 16:22:35 by Jim Robinson
I've checked with an ad agency. We can probably raise the funds we need to operate FR at our current level and at the current market price for online advertising if we run a banner ad at the top of every page and at least one rectangular ad in the above the fold body of the page and a couple rectangular ads in the sidebar. If that doesn't generate enough revenue, we can also run pop ups or pop unders and we can even run audio and video ads if need be. But of course, if we go full bore commercial, we'd have to insure strict copyright compliance with very brief excerpting of all articles to avoid lawsuits. And the agency would require that we install a filter to censor out any bad or unacceptable words in our posts.
Or, of course, there's always the membership model. We could setup a members only system where paying members get full access and non-paying members get throttled back, etc.
I don't like either of the above models and think we'd soon lose a lot of our readers and participants. Of course that may happen anyway if we can't fund it and if we cannot get our equipment problem under control, or if my refusal to vote for or support an abortionist/homosexualist/statist who has plans to install ObamaCare, er, I mean RomneyCare into all 50 states runs everyone off.
The donation model has served us very well since 1997 when we first started using it. It's very clean, uncomplicated and we attract participants who perhaps can't afford membership dues but do want to join the discussion and join our rallies, protests, prayer sessions, etc. And the advertising model would probably bring in the revenue, but it comes with strings attached.
I'm sure there are other ways and ways to combine features of various models, sell books, cds, gear, etc, offer no ads for paid subscribers, etc, even ISP services, but all of these also complicate matters.
I'm an old dog and I like to avoid new tricks, new complications, additional overhead, additional accounting, additional rules and regulations, etc, wherever possible. I like to stick to simplicity and with what works.
Thank you all very much for your continuing participation and support.

[big] The Evangelical "Stay-At-Home" Daughter Movement[/big]
http://churchandstate.org.uk/2010/12/what-is-the-evangelical-stay-at-home-daughters-movement/
Doug Phillips, the man quoted above...is the San Antonio minister is the founder of Vision Forum, a beachhead for whats known as the Christian Patriarchy Movement, a branch of evangelical Christianity that takes beliefs about men as leaders and women as homemakers to anachronistic extremes. Vision Forum Ministries is, according to its Statements of Doctrine, committed to affirming the historic faith of Biblical Christianity, with special attention to the historical faith found in the book of Genesis, when God created Eve as a helper to Adam. According to Christian Patriarchy, marriage bonds man (the symbol of Christ) to woman (the symbol of the Church). Its a model that situates husbands and fathers in a position of absolute power: If a woman disobeys her master, whether father or husband, shes defying God. Thus, women in the Christian Patriarchy Movement arent just stay-at-home motherstheyre stay-at-home daughters as well. And many of them wouldnt have it any other way.
The stay-at-home-daughters movement, which is promoted by Vision Forum, encourages young girls and single women to forgo college and outside employment in favor of training as keepers at home until they marry. Young women pursuing their own ambitions and goals are viewed as selfish and antifamily; marriage is not a choice or one piece of a larger life plan, but the ultimate goal. Stay-at-home daughters spend their days learning advanced homemaking skills, such as cooking and sewing, and other skills that at one time were a necessityknitting, crocheting, soap- and candle-making. A father is considered his daughters authority until he transfers control to her husband.
...Integral to Vision Forums belief about female submission is making sure women are not independent at any point in their lives, regardless of age; hence the organizations enthusiasm for stay-at-home daughterhood. The most visible proponents of this belief are Anna Sofia and Elizabeth Botkin, sisters and authors of the book So Much More: The Remarkable Influence of Visionary Daughters on the Kingdom of God (published by Vision Forum), and creators of the documentary film Return of the Daughters, which follows several young women staying home until marriage, and details how they spend their time serving their fathers. One woman, Melissa Keen, 25, helps put on Vision Forums annual Father-Daughter Retreat, an event thats described on Vision Forums website in terms that are, in a word, discomfiting. (He leads her, woos her, and wins her with a tenderness and affection unique to the bonds of father and daughter.) Another, 23-year-old Katie Valenti, enthuses that her father is the greatest man in my life. I believe that helping my father in his business is a better use of my youth and is helping prepare me to be a better helpmeet for my future husband, rather than indulging in selfishness and pursuing my own success and selfish ambitions. (A video of Valentis 2009 wedding to Phillip Bradrick shows her father announcing into a microphone that he is transferring my authority to you, Phillip.)
this truly makes me want to vomit. I feel so sorry for girls who have the misfortune to be born into one of these families.
I don't know what makes this any different than any other nutcase cult.
