He said he heard the first half of the song on his way into work in Sierra Leone where he is treating Ebola sufferers at an isolation unit.
"It's Africa, not another planet," Mr Pooley told the Radio Times magazine.
"Stuff about Do They Know It's Christmas? It's just like, actually people live normal lives here and do normal things.
"That sort of cultural ignorance is a bit cringeworthy. There's a lyric about 'death in every tear,' it's just a bit much."
Emeli Sande, who sings on Band Aid 30, has also said the lyrics need changing, and the song has been criticised by Lily Allen and Fuse ODG, who pulled out of taking part in the recording.
Speaking before Mr Pooley's comments on Monday, Bob Geldof, who re-wrote the lyrics to Band Aid 30 with Midge Ure, said he didn't care about criticism of the song.

(56,582 posts)My friend lives in Morocco and usually gets snow starting in September (she's in the mountains). South Africa gets very cold in the winter because of its latitude.

The answer is "yes, it does" and today, it snowed in Cairo for the first time in over 100 years! Locals are out building snowmen and shivering away. I have yet to see some shots of Pyramids in the snow, but I'm sure they'll be posted on Facebook!
There are even a few small ski resorts in Morocco, courtesy of the Atlas Mountains. Tunisia and Algeria got snow-laden a few years ago during a particularly cold winter. Snow even fell in the Sahara desert in 1979, but it lasted just half an hour.
Heading further south, snow does fall (on higher elevations), even close to the equator. Regular snow fall has created ice-capped peaks (although most are fast disappearing) on Kenya's Mount Kenya, Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro; Uganda's Rwenzori Mountains and Ethiopia's Semien Mountains. But it's not enough to ski. For that, you have to head all the way south....
