Generous stranger pays off all layaway accounts at Bellingham Toys R Us

BELLINGHAM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The Toys R Us in Bellingham is where a kid can be a kid, and a complete stranger can be an angel.

Around noon on Wednesday, a woman walked into the store and told a cashier she wanted to pay off a layaway balance.

"All of them," she replied. For a total of $20,000.

FOX 25 was there when Diane Brewer from Mendon found out she may not have work extra shifts to pay for the presents she picked out weeks ago for her son.

"I have no words. I can't believe someone would do that, it's so nice," she said. "I have been running around all week picking up layaways everywhere, so this is really awesome."

With all the bad news and greed in the world these days it is nice to read a story like this one.

What a great thing to do, help out struggling families like that. I wish I was in a position to do that, maybe someday. This person obviously knows the TRUE meaning of Christmas. Sure made many kids happy.

More from the OP link:

Jason Wood made a special trip from Grafton to pick up his layaway items, toys for his 6-month-old and 5-year-old daughter.

"I wish there were more people like that," he said.

Jason took the money he was going to spend and used it to buy presents for Toys for Tots.

"You've got to pay it forward. It's good karma," he said.

Why is this "good?"

More overprice Chinese manufactured junk for kids.
Support of a large box store corporation over local mom and pop shop.
Kids grow up learning hyper-consumerism.
Parents continue to put stuff on layaway. If you can't afford it do not get it.
Obviously if layaway was needed, the individuals are already living beyond their means. Why support this?

Guy is obviously a 1%er and is looking out to keep the current economic system propped. "Charity" is a key tool for this. In a just society, financial charity would not be needed.

I deducted points for not even reading a very short excerpt provided. Hint: it was a woman, not a "guy"

She won $1000.00 a week for life. She choose to continue working. She uses some of her money to do random kindnesses. Most of the 1% would never think of doing this, let alone make it happen. This sounds like a kind person making people's lives brighter during a bleak time.

My parents used lay-a-way growing up. With 7 kids, just getting a few items could be spendy, then where do you put them? Lay-a-way was a tricky way for parents to hid the gifts from snoopy kids!

I agree with your sentiments; "More overprice Chinese manufactured junk for kids. Support of a large box store corporation over local mom and pop shop. " but that's about all.

"Why is this "good?"
Because it assists people, regardless of any petulant criticism.

" In a just society, financial charity would not be needed."
Then address the cause rather than the free band-aids.

"Guy is obviously a 1%er and is looking out to keep the current economic system propped."
Post hoc ergo prompter hoc.

Alas, it might scratch their wealth, but no dents! Shoot, what am I saying, they could pay the lay aways off at all of their stores just off some of the interest they made this year!
