"The White House was on the floor, cutting deals."
That's not paranoid fear.
That's not unfounded speculation.
That's straight from the mouth of a Congressman who was there. No link; was told to me personally.
Isn't it great to have a Democrat in the White House?

(37,152 posts)That's where we are - and it's an ugly place.

(6,828 posts)otherwise we would either face a short term fix with a new deal to be negotiated in january when GOPers hold both houses and want to be aggressive with their budget proposals, or face a government shut down.
Neither of the above is appealing to me.

The time to pass a more progressive budget was last month at the polls.
HappyMe
(20,277 posts)about last month. If we had kept seats or even gained a couple, we would have had some wiggle room re the budget. As gross as the big donor and bank parts are, I think we would have gotten something more hideous in January.

(2,097 posts)the President's veto power? Or the Senate filibuster, for that matter?
All this pearl-clutching about how terrible January would be presumes that we have either no ability to fight back, or no willingness to. What that says about your opinion of the president is fascinating.
HappyMe
(20,277 posts)everyone has the will or ability to fight back. I wouldn't have to clutch any pearls if people had got off their asses to vote. If people didn't give enough of a crap to do that, what makes you think they are all about fighting back. I'm sure the republicans will keep sending the president garbage to sign, and he will veto. Rinse and repeat.
The thinking here is black/white. Either Obama is a sell out and a huge disappointment, or he is a can do no wrong saint. I fall into the grey area.

(23,500 posts)A shutdown plays into the hands of the teabaggers. A government that is reduced to only police and the military has always been their goal.
They get what they have always wanted, and the Democrats get the blame for all the suffering that it would cause.
We have no good options.
Proud Public Servant
(2,097 posts)We just get to roll right over them and do whatever we want while they wring their hands and bemoan their lack of options.
Say what you will about the GOP, at least they know how to fight. But I guess we can call it even, since we completely dominate the "bending over and taking it" skill set.

(23,500 posts)So the Rapeuglicans can shut down the government and suffer no consequences,
but the Democrats would get crucified for it.

(3,533 posts)The right-wing TV nuts. They're not the majority, 36% turnout in midterms. How many dems would be cheering for the party when they finally find their backbones and stand up for our principles.

The polling for the votes changed drastically after that.

Call your Senators.
