Conservatives & right wing Christians really do want government out of poverty mitigation. Government deprives them of captive audiences they can convert and control in their quest for theocracy.

According to an article on alternet.org RW Christians have a vested interest in getting government money to provide for the poor. The conservative meme that churches and charities are the only mean to fight poverty is a trojan horse. The can discriminate against non believers and those people they find participating in unacceptable behavior. They can make attending services mandatory to receive aid.

And the real myth is that churches can fill the funding void. The truth is that they could never service everyone and would be in a position to pick and choose who they help.

Omg discriminate?! The Baptist church around the corner runs a center visited by hundreds, and for the most part none are even members of the church and no one is turned away. Food, clothes, holiday gifts -
But, go ahead, have your fun. While they keep giving - what are you donating?

I live in the KC area, so the latter really pisses me off. I have been almost homeless because of homophobia, so yeah, LOL all you want. It affects real people.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]I once knew an "officer" in the Salvation Army who bluntly stated that their only mission is to "save souls" and helping the poor is merely bait, otherwise "an afterthought."

I also once new some nuns who worked with the poor back around the time LBJ was initiating his War on Poverty. They were very upset about government getting involved in providing for the poor, since it would take away their primary means of cajoling people into the Catholic Church.
