The House of Representatives gave the Senate more time to approve a $1.1 trillion spending bill on Friday, passing a stopgap measure that will keep the government running until Wednesday, but a conservative revolt in the Senate late Friday night threw that stop gap measure into limbo and is forcing the Senate to come to work Saturday to continue its work.

After Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, agreed to postpone the highly anticipated vote until Monday, conservative Republicans objected to the bipartisan leadership plan to take the weekend off before the vote.

When Sen. Reid went to the floor and tried to establish the spending bill vote for 5 p.m. on Monday, Sen. Mike Lee, R-UT, objected to Reid's motion, saying he wanted a vote on defunding President Obama's executive action on immigration.

If this bill does no pass this session of congress, republicans will have their turn at writing a new on next year. The defunding of the presidents executive order on immigration will be just one of the things they will put in the bill along with defunding of Obamacare, and eatery other thing they can think of to help the 1% and hurt the rest of the country. There is no way a new bill written by republicans will be better than the one they have now. Yes, the one now has a lot to be unhappy about, but just think of all the things they WILL put in a new one that we will be unhappy about.

the Omnibus funds the government till next September, so yes they will do what they can to screw things up during the next two years, but they can't change the funding in this bill until it's time for a new one. That at least helps fund things democrats want in the next year. If they get to write a new Omnibus after the first of the year, then we are really going to be screwed with no funding for a lot of things that are now funded in the one up for a vote. You can take a bad bill like the one on the floor, or you can get a far, far worse bill by letting republicans write the whole thing next year. That's the difference.

Before midnight tonight, something has to be passed, even temporary, with "Unanimous Consent" or we have a government shutdown.

Any single Senator can bring it all to a screeching halt.

For Cruz and Lee, this is all about the President's executive action on immigration. If these guys stick to their principles, just like we want our Democrats to stick to their principles, we will have a shutdown, and it could get very messy, since any new legislation or changes to the bills sent over from the House require the return of the House, which is in recess (they thought it all was a done deal).

Reid and Durbin both pointed out Cruz had mucked it all up, just like the last time he single-handedly shut down the government. Since that Republican shutdown, the Republicans have substantially increased control of the House, and taken the Senate. I just hope Cruz has learned his lesson!

The Senate term is 6 years, but all the Senators never are replaced the same year. I think it's 1/3.

Some fella on the teevee said that the 1/3 that are elected/reelected in 2016 (actually election is in 2015) are mostly in BLUE states, so we could undue whatever havoc they reek from 2014 to 2016.

Obama won in 2008, and so did the Senate, and for a brief time, the House. The House changes every 2 years with everybody elected/reelected at the same time. Some Dems might have stayed in longer if not for the ACA.

So, in 2016 we should have the Senate back. Don't feel like doing the math, but I wonder what happens when you go back every 6 years and see what happened then and who we put into office in that Dem Senate year.

Too confusing for me...Pesident's term is 4 years, and my head is too congested to factor in when 4 years and 6 years hit at the same time and try to remember what kind of Senate we had and who was president.

Let's just skip the whole thing, dammit. Ain't worth the trouble and sure as hell won't change anything.

They won't be more careful because no matter what they do, no matter how bad the break things, their base will still be there to vote for them because they have been taught to hate every liberal on the planet. Remember that with only a 38% or so turnout this year, the republicans won, so that means that of the few that did turnout the majority of them were republicans.

If they are allowed to write a new Omnibus bill after the end of this year, you can bet they will take on Obmacare funding, the immigration issue, EPA, and all kinds of things they hate and want repealed or defunded. There is no way they will give a shit about Obama vetoing the bill, they will just keep blaming it all on him and the MSM will help them spread that meme.

Meanwhile millions of Americans will be hurt by the government shutdown. I don't think keeping the government shut down is worth "wishing" for a better bill to be written by a republican controlled congress.
