GIVE A REC FOR SATAN!Two weeks ago I found myself in the backwoods of rural Florida standing in front of a bronzed bust of the pagan idol Baphomet. A few days later it would be attached to its eight-and-a-half-foot cloven-hoofed body and put to rest on a throne flanked on either side by a small metallic child. Eventually, its creators hope, it will be whisked away to Oklahoma, where it will be placed next to a Ten Commandments monument on the front lawn of the state capitol.
I had come to this foundry in the middle of the sticks with Lucien Greaves, the spokesperson for the Satanic Temple, the group behind the monument. The last time I saw it was in a small Brooklyn studio in April, when it was still being formed out of clay by Mark Porter, an artist trained in classical sculpture. Now, seven months later, it's almost finished.

Heres the First Look at the New Satanic Monument Being Built for Oklahomas Statehouse
In January the Satanic Temple announced plans to erect a monument glorifying the Dark Lord on the front lawn of the Oklahoma Statehouse. An Indiegogo campaign was launched with what seemed like a somewhat lofty goal of $20,000, but by the time donations ended almost $30,000 had been raised. Now an artist trained in classical sculpture is toiling away in New York, crafting a Baphomet figure sitting beneath an inverted pentagram and flanked by two children gazing upward in loyalty. When it is finished, it will be cast in bronze and, the Satanists hope, eventually displayed in Oklahoma.
The statue is a direct response to the state's installation of a Ten Commandments monument outside the Capitol in 2012. State Representative Mike Ritze paid for the controversial statue with his own money, and therefore it was considered a donation and OK to place on government property. Following that line of reasoning, the Satanic Temple submitted a formal application for their monument.
As Trait Thompson of the Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission told CNN last December, Individuals and groups are free to apply to place a monument or statue or artwork. The applications are then approved or rejected by the Commission. Unfortunately, the state has placed a halt on issuing permits for any other monuments until a lawsuit filed by the ACLU against Ritzes Commandments monument is settled.

Nice job by the artist on the scuplture.

(37,428 posts)Sincere efforts to promote a faith that happen to undercut the complacency and overreach of the Christian supremacists may be indistinguishable from the finest, most exquisite trolling.
Forcing the theocrats to eat their own words is a good thing. If the state has to be perverted into an engine of proselytizing, I pray that Ceiling Cat will get the next monument.

(32,723 posts)Which is cool because that means a lot of the rituals are no doubt handed down from prior faiths.
When I see the people singing a hymn as a procession approaches the altar I know that dates back to the time of the Greeks and Romans with the worship of their deities.
No doubt the collection plate is another tradition.

Being from jokelahoma ....lol...love that.... I can say all the local newspapers here are abuzz with christofascist hatery on this whole thing, which brings me glee, since I'm not part of their insanity.
I have no doubt that if/when this awesome peice of art/irony is installed it will probably be promptly vandalized by some christian wingnut. So i hope they do something to keep it protected, but i think that's doubtful.

(19,537 posts)And have the property owned by a corporation so that it can use the Hobby Lobby rights it has as a religious corporation to put it there. That way, if people there challenge it, they can themselves have a court case to challenge the verdict of the Hobby Lobby case as an added benefit!
There should be enough Oklahomans already against the Hobby Lobby case given that it allows Islamic corporations to enact shariah law over its employees, and they've been frustrated by the courts also taking down their law they tried to enact earlier against Shariah Law.

(3,747 posts)You might be surprised. I find the tenets of satanism to be far more gentle and beautiful then most religions, by far.
I do love goats, though. As soon as I have a place where I can own one, I will. Such intelligent, playful creatures.

(13,985 posts)Matthew 25:31-46New International Version (NIV)
The Sheep and the Goats
31 When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.
37 Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?
40 The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.
41 Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.

(3,186 posts)While I don't support religious statues in public places, if they are going to do it anyway, why not the beatitudes instead?... My theory regarding this emphasis of the old testament's 10 commandments is that it fits their punitive mindsets and general lack of empathy for people they consider to be morally inferior.
They call themselves Christians, but don't seem to care much for his message.
THE BEATITUDES
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure of heart,
for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
But to get back to the OP's topic, I totally support what the Satanic Temple folks are doing. Haha, serves those sanctimonious fundies right. I'd like to see more religious groups do similar things. For example there could be a Buddha statue, maybe some Hindu gods/goddesses, ect.
