the school's Facebook page posted this:
"The Gideons are permitted to offer Bibles to students who wish to pick them up. It is strictly voluntary and the library was the location where students could pick one up; out (sic) librarian did not give them out. We appreciate your input. If you have further concerns, please contact administration during school hours. Thank you!"
Religious choice is both very important and highly personal. Some individuals take it upon themselves to impress their religious views on others. In some cases, individuals push the boundaries of law to spread their views.
The law is fairly clear regarding separation of church and state... and giving permission to any religious group to hand out religious books or documents during school is a clear violation of the law.
While I certainly support rights to practice any religion of choice, school is about scholastic learning, rather than religious indoctrination.

OP
If it's OK to pass out the Bible, is it OK to pass out the Koran or the Book of Mormon?

But handing out The Origin of Species in science class is still controversial.

It would only seem fair.

The bible, and any other religious documents/books are not permitted to be distributed on school grounds by non students.

Barbaric degenerates.

(1,555 posts)5. I dont mind discussions over the origion of the species...however...
The moment that it stops being a scholastic endeavor, it becomes immediately illegal.
Discussions over origin are almost universally one sided anyway.
Something about science having a factual bias or some such.

Yep. Factual bias indeed. Science, it's one of the main things that moves us forward.

That was more than forty years ago.
You didn't have a choice, you had to take one.
My brother and I held a Bible burning. Pissed off some of the other kids, but we had fun.
The High School kids liked getting them. They used the pages as rolling papers.
