Parents will try to take out another mortgage on house. Wonder if they even have that much equity. Vigilante man may not see the outside for awhile.

(2,091 posts)not the whole $150,000? I thought if he fled, then the rest is owed.

(39,343 posts)most times people have to show that they are good for it by putting up the whole thing or finding a bondsmen who will take a lien on a house or something similar. He has to prove he can get the whole amount.

(4,062 posts)If/when he is released, it will be much harder and more expensive to protect him.

(12,335 posts)Making the cash payout $15,000. I want the world to know all the facts. Plus, $150,000 is a weak bond for murder charges. He got a free ride....in my opinion.

(13,590 posts)One can always post their own bond by, as you say, coming up with the whole amount. However, a bonding company can do it too for a 10% fee.
Florida, like many states, allows private bonding agencies to post a bail bond. These agencies charge 10%, which is their fee and is non-refundable. However, the arrestee still has to have attachable assets worth 100% of the bond to sign over to the bonding company for the duration of the case. When the case is over, the bonding agency releases their lien on the collateral, but keeps the 10% fee.
So, in this case, Zimmerman could get a bail bond for $15,000 in cash, but he (or a friend or relative) would still have to put up $150,000 in assets (house, car, real property, etc.) as collateral.

(26,068 posts)He cannot bond out at 10%. It has to be 100%. The Court is allowed to ask that.

(379 posts)According to the Florida Attorneys, he has to come up with $10,000 cash and the full $150,000 collateral. That makes sense. The bondsman gets 10% no matter what and if George flees, the bondsman gets his $150,000 back from the collateral George put up.

(7,572 posts)Why does he not have a job? Did he get into trouble somewhere and fired, or what? I think that bears on his character. Also, where does he live? He didn't live in the same apartment development as Strayvon, did he, and if not, why was he "neighborhood watching" outside his own neighborhood????

(36,926 posts)I know his wife said they had collected unemployment insurance. Maybe that's his income now.

(26,219 posts)I just caught some audio on MSNBC's website of his wife being asked who owns their house and she responded "our landlord" and confirmed that they were renting.
It caught my attention because it was a bond hearing - and without an asset such as real estate, they would have a tough time making bond (adding to the fact that he left the state and she didn't see him until after his arrest).

(26,068 posts)I bet there are plenty of men and women in that jail right now who can't pay a few hundred bucks, or even a thousand, to bail out. It's possible his parents have an IRA they can cash in, or have enough equity in their home to sign over to a bail bondsman.
Them's the breaks when you play Dirty Harry and shoot someone just because they were a black male teenager carrying iced tea and candy.

(8,582 posts)If he does come up with the 10%, he'll never see that money again. If he puts up the full amount of $150,000, he would get that back after going to court.

(25,183 posts)There are probably those who waited until the bail hearing to decide what they were going to do. All it takes is $25 from 6K people (an average of 120 people per state) and he's got the dough, if you don't count fees from credit cards, PayPal, etc.
With his lawyer doing it solely for the publicity, it actually means that those who decide to support him will not be paying the bills of an overpriced attorney. That might just push some over the edge in deciding they want to take his side financially.

(28,928 posts)because they want him to go free and shove it in the faces of the blacks. They really don't like Zimmerman at all, and are probably fine with him in jail right now, they just see him as a tool keep the Blacks angry and they are wishing for a race war.
Just a guess on my part.

(12,310 posts)collateral and a bail bondsman will pay the 150.

(36,926 posts)You'd think they would have prepared for that contingency. Maybe they don't have enough collateral in the house to put it up.
