http://readersupportednews.org/news-section2/318-66/27570-iran-unveils-monument-to-jewish-soldiers-killed-in-iran-iraq-warIran this week unveiled a monument to Jewish soldiers killed in the Iran-Iraq War, which lasted from 1980 to 1988 and saw both countries suffer millions of casualties and billions of dollar in damage.
Jewish community leaders and a number of Iranian religious officials took part in the ceremony on Monday, according to Maariv's website, NRG.
Photographs from the ceremony were published on the websites of Iranian news agencies IRNA and Tasnim, showing banners featuring images of the fallen Jewish troops, called "martyrs," and wreaths placed alongside the monument, which includes a Hebrew inscription reading "Peace forever."
Other images show religious figures laying wreaths at the soldiers' graves and attendees of the ceremony praying together.
The vice speaker of Iran's parliament attended the ceremony, where he praised the Jewish community for supporting the government.
The explicit stances of the Jewish community in supporting the Islamic Republics establishment and their obedience to the Supreme Leader of the [Islamic] Revolution demonstrate the bonds originating from the teachings of the divine religions, Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi-Fard said on Monday, according to Tasnim news agency.

(135,425 posts)There used to be a very vibrant community in Teheran, Esfahan and Shiraz which is pretty much decimated. There has been a diaspora of Persian Jews as a consequence of the government's fucking with them so much, off and on, down the years. It's ironic that the community was safest under the last Shah. Some went to Israel but many have settled in USA (not just in Teherangeles--aka LA, either).
It's nice that the current leadership is softening the rhetoric and making this gesture. There are fewer than 10K Jews left in the entire country now, less than one tenth of the Jewish population when Khomeini landed... but I suppose better late than never.
Even at that, if I am to be honest, I would not recommend that Persian Jews think about returning--the environment is just not safe.
