Because this comes so late in the "peace on earth season", I have not contacted DU management in advance. I understand if this gets locked.
Since W took office the US middle class on down has suffered. Ask any real DUer.
Wages are flat for the jobs that are available. More than 46 million Americans living below the poverty line. Budget cuts across the US, state, county, and municipal levels are taking a toll. The safety net of the private sector is overwhelmed. The DU safety net (http://wishadoo.org/) was overwhelmed too.
DUers as a community have been generous in times of need to fellow DUers. A few have been critical of giving a helping hand. I don't know how to answer the naysayers.
Marta and I have a warm home. We have had very bad times. We want to help. We stopped giving to the Salvation Army over differences with them over LGBT issues. I know this comes a little late into the season, but can we help a few DUers at this time of year?
I don't know how to do this on my own. With an organized effort we can do so much for very little.
So how do we do this?
Season's greetings,
Steve & Marta

(8,267 posts)and Dena is a wonderful soul for making it happen.
I truly appreciate your sentiment herein above. I wish I could help others, too.
I was wrongfully terminated the day before Thanksgiving break--the day after I found out I needed a molar extracted by an oral surgeon. I got to use the free clinic instead, and sat in a dentist's chair for over an hour while he took out the tooth in pieces.
I found out yesterday that I am going to receive unemployment benefits. I am already signed up for SNAP and get almost 200 a month for food.
I am no longer frightened that I'll be homeless next month, even if my resources are slim. I feel blessed that I am NOT homeless, but I am just not able to help others at this time.
I would encourage you to go into stealth mode, and see if you can find someone (or multiple someones) who is truly in need. You can also go to Wishadoo and contact Dena.
Thank you for being a giving, compassionate couple!

(22,920 posts)Hi, Steve and Marta
I echo chervilant's gratitude for your compassion.
Wishadoo! does still exist but is currently on hold until I can get help running the site and the off-shoot projects that have been developed as a result of the work at Wishadoo over the years (http://ourgood.org)
While I can't help you with your current generous offer of kindness, if it's okay, I'll be back after the first of the year and perhaps there are DUers who would like to be involved in the next evolution of Wishadoo.
Wishing you and Marta and all here a wonderful holiday.

(22,920 posts)I still intend to structure Wishadoo! as a member-owned and operated cooperative.
That may be of interest to some here. Just sayin'.
Collaborative compassion, don'tcha know.
I think you'll get helpful private messages from DUers in need to help with your current offer.

(6,943 posts)It would be the best Christmas present ever, if I could finally reach my fundraising goal. While I fully expect to receive my SS disability by late February or early March, my cash-on-hand is in the double digits, so I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Was home for about an hour or so. Then off to a ball game. I'll be at another one tomorrow.
I'll be back to comment on this more sometime late Saturday afternoon.

(99,556 posts)But fewer overall requests than I expected so far. I'll wait until Tuesday and divide up what we budgeted for this and send it out.
