Senator John McCain has called the cyberattack “an act of war”

FBI links North Korea to Sony hack ahead of Obama press conference – live updates

Senator John McCain has called the cyberattack “an act of war”, CNN reports, quoting McCain’s comments to an Arizona radio station.

“This is the greatest blow to free speech that I’ve seen in my lifetime probably. We have to respond in kind. We have lots of capability in cyber and we ought to start cranking that up.”

“Cyber security is the least understood, most dangerous element of our national security today.”

McCain also said Sony should “suck it up, show the movie”.

As the next chair of the Senate armed services committee, McCain said he plans to hold a cybersecurity hearing in the coming weeks.

It's an act of intimidation against a company and an industry. It does deserve a response. The response should have been to ignore NK and show the damn movie. (And fortify your networks, duh).

and McCain's whole life revolves around the "Next war" he can stir up for his donors. He eats, sleeps and breathes war and conflict to insight war.

I think the attack on freedom of expression is very serious, and there should be some form of proportional response. But it is not an act of war.

It's not terrorism either.

I do agree that Sony should suck it up, and show the movie.

The things McCain does not think are acts of war. His opinion is like a fart in the wind. Just a momentary stench.

He believes he has the right to decide what other countries do (I hate NK's gov't, but I also hate McCain's warmongering ways) and that the U.S. and it's allies have the right to bomb the hell out of ............. whoever. He wakes up salivating over who to bomb next. I wish he'd trot over there himself and confront them, big, tough man that he is.

A foreign government attacking the economic interests of a country like this IS an act of war. This is not a legitimate way to respond to a movie they don't like. The legitimate options are:

- File a diplomatic complaint

- Issue a response to the media outlining why what the movie says is wrong, etc.

It's the cyber version of a U-Boat sinking a merchant ship where all of the sailors on the ship are rescued and unharmed. All of the damage is economic, but its still an act of war.
