General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDo you have racial biases?
When I say racial biases I mean impulses upon seeing people of a different race than yourself - some of which might be negative, some of which might be positive.
This is inspired by a discussion on another thread about the President's recent speech.

Edit:
SEC SEC 'cause I'm a bigot and apparently an idiot.

(12,081 posts)on my general social anxiety I've never noticed if any of it is racial, but I wouldn't doubt if some of it is.

(2,256 posts)I have bad anxiety. I take 3 different meds for it, one of them is twice a day. With that said, I would like to believe that I hate all people equally.

(11,804 posts)I'll say that I knew one and only one black person growing up - so when I moved to the South I didn't have a lot to go on and tended to see them as exotic and alien, which took a while to get over. In particular when a black person looked angry or upset, to my eyes, he looked really really angry and threatening (TV probably played a roll there) in a way that white people didn't.
On the other hand I knew a few kids from the middle east growing up and then in college and tended to have a very positive reaction to them - they seemed easy to get along with. I still more or less do.

Well, good luck with your thread. I'm off to watch "The Lunchbox," because, you know, Indians are smart and I like smart movies.

What matters is how it affects your actions.

(9,527 posts)I took a psych study test where you would see a picture of a face briefly and then even faster a weapon or a tool. So like a gun or a drill. While my accuracy in seeing the tool or weapon didn't change, my response time was slower when seeing a black face.
That said I don't believe I act on that.
One weird thing I find that I do, is when taking change from a minority cashier, I have a habit of actually letting my fingers touch theirs in a way I don't do with white cashiers. I don't have a good theory of why other than to maybe show I'm not afraid to do so.

(38,302 posts)I'm white, I grew up in an all white community, and all the guys who bullied, harassed, and beat the hell out of me when I was a kid were, of course, white.
I've lived most of my life now in mostly cosmopolitan communities where white isn't a majority. That's my "normal." It feels weird when I visit places where everyone is white, more uncomfortable even than visiting places where most everyone is Asian or Native American or Black.

I DO have cultural biases, which I am aware of, and generally try to move beyond. I'm a work in progress.

(29,322 posts)It is interesting like the President test. It switches it up and asks you "left" "right" so much that eventually you aren't planning your responses. I was quick to "left" for Jimmy Carter, accidentally moved "right" on Clinton more than a few times. I also made mistakes on the bad adjectives when it came to Nixon & Reagan. I made a mistake on the word "terrible" with Obama but for some reason didn't when it came to the far worse adjectives.
Very interesting tests.
