WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) President Barack Obama on Friday said the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline wouldnt benefit American consumers, but stopped short of saying hed veto a bill authorizing its construction if the Republican Congress sends him such a measure next year.
At a year-end news conference, Obama said the pipeline a top priority of congressional Republicans would mainly benefit Canadian companies and that the completed project wouldnt be even a nominal benefit for U.S. consumers since it wouldnt reduce gasoline prices. The pipeline would be built by TransCanada
The comments were some of Obamas most critical to date about the proposed project, which would carry oil from Canadas oil sands to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries.
The issue is set to burst onto the political scene anew when Congress convenes in January. Earlier this week, incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Keystone would be the first order of business on the Senates agenda. Prior attempts to approve the pipeline have failed in the Senate but odds of passing a bill will greatly improve with Republicans in charge.
Obama didnt explicitly say he would veto a bill. But he didnt sound welcoming of one, either.
Ill see what they do, he said about lawmakers.

(16,254 posts)I can't believe anyone can get suckered in on that pipeline project unless they are bribed. We can't afford those clowns to leak oil across our mid-section and contaminate our water sources.

Better Sooner than Later....although the Oil Price Drop by the Saudi's probably had more to do with it ...in my mind....but, that he at least is "thinking about" taking out that dusty Veto Pen is good news.
We've got to keep the Pressure Up on PBO, though. Or, he will forget about Us.

For the life of me, I can't see any good points to the Keystone, but I can sure see a lot of bad points. Didn't Obama say the same thing today?
