There's a reasonable case that he's better than LBJ, and a plausible case that he's better than JFK would have been had he lived.

He achieves parity with Eisenhower and Truman, in my opinion.

It's impossible to judge another great President against FDR because of the unique circumstances of that time, but I say at least that FDR would have approved of him.

I believe Lincoln would also approve of this President, but as with FDR that's just speculation.

... still unresolved, and in many cases, further aggravated or escalated.

What does it say about America when a legacy of 'accomplishment' is disconnected from the needs of so many citizens?

Nearly 5.5 million more Americans were living in poverty last year than before he took office
http://www.philly.com/philly/news/Factcheck_Obamas_numbers_October_2014_update.html#4wTMXkgyLboaJ6uc.99

The poverty rate dropped 0.5 percent in 2013, but remained 1.3 percent higher than in 2008.

Some legacies of U.S. presidents are more enduring than others...

10,000 troops to remain in Afghanistan past the end of this year; 1500 more troops heading to Iraq, 1700 there now. DoD says present U.S. military effort could last as long as three years.

Over 1000 more troops killed in Afghanistan under Obama defending Karzai than Bush sacrificed avenging 9-11

Obama prosecuted more than double the # of whistleblowers under the Espionage Act than all prior presidents combined - link

Pres. Obama actually expanded the Bush-era surveillance state; roving wiretaps, renewed Patriot Act, extended FISA

Obama has done much worse than Clinton and Carter in terms of killing innocent people in war without much to show for it. He has also been an executive power extremist and so has extended Bush's legacy there. He also failed to amend the War Crimes Act and the Torture Act to make waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques unambiguously criminal. He has also been much worse than Clinton and Carter on education issues. And he has deported way more people than either Carter or Clinton. Clinton did more for the poor than Obama by expanding the EITC although Obamacare also did a lot for the poor.

The Bush invasions, the creation of guantanamo, the homeland security nonsense--these were abominable inheritances Obama walked into. But he is an accessory to these crimes--and to the bankster scams--when he prevents an honest revisiting and investigation into criminal activity. I think Obama's presidency has been a case of tragic missed opportunities.

Sat Dec 20, 2014, 06:28 PM

So, I'll go with LBJ, in spite of the Vietnam War.

Kennedy was inspiring, but he didn't have a clue how to get his pet legislation through Congress. It was only after LBJ took the reins that we got the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Medicare passed. Add the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and other War on Poverty measures, that was a record of which a president could really be proud. Those things were big.

And then there was the Vietnam War. I could accept from LBJ and his advisers, if I asked them what I thought they were trying to accomplish in Vietnam, that they were trying to contain Communism. If the Bushies told me they went into Iraq to fight a war on terror, I would tell any one of them to his face that he's lying. Nevertheless, a strategic retreat in Vietnam would have been better than trying to keep the crooked leaders in Saigon propped up. That strategy was doomed from the start.

I can't rate Obama higher than Johnson. While Obama has had a number of successes that are laudable, he has also had a number of failure, most of which come not as overt acts but as omissions. He didn't prosecute banksters, he didn't prosecute war criminals and he didn't end Bush's spy-on-everyone program (his cosmetic changes don't amount to anything worth the mention as far I'm concerned). The trade deals he's pushing may turn out to be the biggest blot on his legacy. He'll have a much better reputation in history if those go down to defeat.

The use of the word "Centrism" for THESE policies is Orwellian as hell
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025246398#post11

"Centrism" to me carries a deliberate connotation of being "in the center"..in other words, not extreme in either direction. Ditto for the word "moderate," which is constantly used to describe Third Way politicians whose policies are anything but moderate in the traditional sense of the word.

Austerity and attacks on safety nets in a country that has already devastated its middle class are opposed by over 80 percent of Americans across party lines, yet these Third Way economic positions are nevertheless described as "centrist," as though they fell in the mainstream of American opinion. Policies coming out of our government now routinely bear little resemblance to what people have repeatedly stated in polls that they want, and neoliberal politicians lie their way through campaigns because they realize how unpopular their positions really are...yet we persist in calling them "centrists."

Secret laws, secret courts, "Kill Lists"/indefinite detention without due process, and mass surveillance in the United States of America are extreme violations of our Constitution and should not be considered "moderate" positions in any sense of the word. They are extreme, even fascistic policies, yet the politicians who espouse them are permitted by us to describe themselves as "moderates."

I think we need to start using the words, "corporatist," "extreme," and even "fascist" to describe what is happening in this country under the corporatist/neoconservative/neoliberal/Third Way agenda. We are witnessing a malignant merger of state and corporations and the active dismantling of important Constitutional protections. The corporate state is pouring our tax dollars into propaganda and marketing for their agenda, and IMO the vast majority of Americans, while aware of their own economic pain, have little understanding of the peril facing our democratic institutions and basic Constitutional protections.

We use words that suggest the current neoliberal and neocon policies are business as usual in America...just another flavor of policies that Americans can trust still fall safely within the boundaries of a democratic, constitutional, representative political system. They are "centrist" or "moderate." But they really aren't...and I think we need to adjust our labels to drive home the seriousness of the crisis we face.

He is the only political figure I have seen who I know is a better, smarter and harder working person than I am. I don't care to debate this or compare him to JFK or FDR. I appreciate the fact that he's unique.

born in '63, a few months before JFK was cut down. I do believe President Obama is the greatest President since FDR, although I'm sure many will disagree. Do I worship him and agree with everything he's done? Hell, no! However, even though his Presidency has been clouded with bigotry and major criticism from people on all sides of the political debate, I stand by my belief.

Social issues mostly good. Economic issues not so good and more than a little very bad. Again, check out the TPP and realize he tried to sneak this by us under dark of night.

He is not unlike Clinton is many respects. Bubba talks a good game but that does not excuse letting the banks play casino again by doing away with Glass-Steagall and giving us NAFTA and other awful trade agreemenets.

Don't agree with it all. But is fair enough. I think BHO has been considerably more progressive than WJC on social issues but Obama governed in more progressive time on social issues anyway.
