We had relatives over for dinner and were talking about the problems with police in NYC. One of my relatives was explaining the Garner homicide to his children with such dispassion... I couldn't deal with it and threw a bit of a fit.
I don't understand how any person can watch the killing on video and not be furious. Red-in-the face, arm-flapping, flecks-of-spittle furious.
Officer Pantaleo went for the windpipe the moment Garner started moving his arms a bit, and stayed focused on his windpipe, moving as necessary as Garner was taken to the ground, until the man selling single cigarettes who broke up a fight was dead. At the very least, it was a deliberate act intended to put Garner at the brink of death to keep him under control.
For selling single cigarettes breaking up a fight.
I generally like police, and think that most all of them, at least in my state of Massachusetts, wake up each day and work hard to live up to the moniker of peace officer. But that pack of hyenas in Staten Island, particularly Pantaleo... until they're held to account for their actions, actions as plain as day, I can't see how there will be a lasting peace in NYC.

(1,727 posts)There had been a fight in public that was broken up by Garner and others before the cops responded.
When the officers showed up and realized that there was nothing for them to do, Pantaleo started harassing Garner about selling cigarettes because he'd cited him previously. When Garner asked to be left alone, Pantaleo and his buddies attacked him.
Garner wasn't killed for selling cigarettes. He was killed for talking back to a cop.

(9,033 posts)as I understand it the offense is one that requires a summons, not an arrest. So WTF were 5 or 6 police officers doing there, other than killing a man with--if not malice aforethought--depraved indifference? WTF?

(1,727 posts)that Garner and other people who were present helped break up before the police arrived. Pantaleo only started to question (harass) Garner about selling cigarettes when he and the other officers who responded realized that there was nothing else for them to do.
You're correct about the offense only requiring a summons. That's why the notion that Garner was "resisting arrest" when they pounced on him is so fucking ridiculous.

(9,033 posts)who had helped break up a fight? This story just keeps getting worse.
All of them ought to be up on murder charges.

(1,727 posts)Indeed.
Same goes for the EMTs who were on scene the entire time and did nothing to help Garner.
I hope that Garner's family sues the living shit out of those clowns.

(174 posts)Not that hard to understand.
Choked to death = murdered.
Period.
If you don't agree, then I guess it will be just fine
when your child is choked to death by police
for talking back.
