I can't believe I'm saying this, because he's my hero, but President Carter, Shut up!

Former President Jimmy Carter told MSNBC that President Obama would likely win re-election this fall, but said that he would be fine with Mitt Romney as president.

Said Carter: "I'd rather have a Democrat but I would be comfortable -- I think Romney has shown in the past, in his previous years as a moderate or progressive... that he was fairly competent as a governor and also running the Olympics as you know. He's a good solid family man and so forth, he's gone to the extreme right wing positions on some very important issues in order to get the nomination. What he'll do in the general election, what he'll do as president I think is different."

I respect Pres. Carter, but he's wrong on this one. We DON'T know what a Pres. Rmoney would do, but it's a safe bet that he'd do whatever his corporate masters tell him to do. The GOP today is not the same GOP that existed when Rmoney was governor. It's even more extreme and dangerous. And I wouldn't count on Rmoney to buck his fellow GOPers in Congress -- i.e., all the teabaggers.

JC is wrong on this one.

you think they aren't gonna vote for the lesser of two evils? You thnik they are gonna stay home in droves when they have a cro-magnon Congressperson to vote for? Ultimately Romney does not have to win the GOP base. Once he is the nominee he can take them for granted, and he has to win the center. He can always nominate a cro-magnon veep to throw a bone to the base.

enough to beat Kerry in 2004, although 2 million fewer than Bush. Obama picked up a lot of moderate votes and basically got to run against Bush who blew up the economy in 2008. And Sarah Palin, althoug fully conservative was probably the wrong bone to throw to the base, a base which was no more ready to elect a woman Veep than the voters of 1984, especially not a woman veep widely regarded as even dumber than Danforth Quayle.

because unless some rightwing version of Ralph Nader gets on the ballot in all 50 states, those people are still gonna vote for the lesser of two evils. But some, sort of moderate, centrist, undecided people might be swayed to vote for Romney.

as a Democrat can now be. In fact, he was as conservative as all the blue dogs that DU does not usually like. Culturally, he is likely not more liberal or progressive than Romney was as Massachusetts governor. One thing that I fortunately did not know until reading it on DU - and then verifying it, is that as governor of Georgia, he proclaimed a Lt Calley day after he was released from prison. Where I do get that some felt he was scapegoated and no one higher was tried, but he was a convicted mass murdered who greatly damaged the image of our country and military. While I do think after he was released he should have been allowed to live his life, but the idea that anyone did anything to honor him in the least is just wrong.

"Carter likes him, that is how much of a librul Rmoney is." Damned with faint praise, sorta. The extreme mainstream will HATE this. They all suspect this, but Carter just gave away the game, so to speak. This is pushing FUD toward the teapublickers. "The game is rigged, might as well stay home."

Nicely done, Mr. President, nicely done.

is senile. He's a very smart man, looks to me like he basically gave Romney a kiss of death as far as Republicans are concerned, who are already not happy with him. Be interesting to see how rightwingers are reacting to Carter's 'endorsement'. It's likely to scare them to death.
