PETITION: Reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act

The Violence Against Women Act provides funding to investigate, prosecute, and prevent violent crimes against women and children.

Yet, Republican men in the Senate are playing political games with this life-saving legislation.

Send a clear message that any result other than the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act is unacceptable and unconscionable. Sign the petition to the right and make your voice heard.

6. Another Take on VAWA

I recently talked to a friend of mine who is going through a hellish divorce. He sued for divorce after his wife struck him during an argument. He did not hit first. He's a non-violent person, and his wife is, frankly, a loose cannon. Well, after he sued for divorce and custody, she accused HIM of hitting her to the police. The police proceeded to arrest him - in front of their kindergarten-aged daughter, whom he was picking up at school at the time. He also spent five days in jail because he couldn't afford bond. His wife has perjured herself at least three times during these divorce proceedings to say that he hit her, when it was the other way around. He also has proof of this, and eyewitnesses to her violence. His security clearance (he's a government contractor) has been temporarily revoked, and now he can't work. When he asked the cops and the District Attorney why he had been arrested, even though his wife was clearly perjuring herself, and they all told him that it was because of VAWA. Apparently, divorce lawyers are instructing their female clients to claim domestic abuse if there wasn't, because they will automatically get custody of the kids. Besides, the divorce proceedings will be fast-tracked.

So, I'm re-thinking this based on this person's POV. He's a good Dem, loves Obama, but he's actually considering voting Republican because of this.
