to go under so my right wing father can complain about pricing and the difficulty of mailing a letter.

Anyone think fed ex is going to check your mail box every day of the week? I don't think so.

to say about how the P.O. was being destroyed. (As much from within as from outside.)

Unfortunately, it is going to happen.

I've not heard Pres. Obama rigorously come to the defense of the Post Office.
I've only heard two or three Senators and Representatives and Ed Schultz defending the Post Office.

The Post Office has been a favorite target of the reactionary rightwing for decades and decades -- even though it is mandated in the Constitution.

Now, the Post Office is a targeted for destruction by the Ayn Rand-Tea Party-Rmoney Repuglicans ... and even most Democrats are silent.

But we will be sorry. The end of the Post Office as we have known it will mean a marked decrease in our quality of life in this country; as more states and localities have gone to mail ballots, it will mean a further decrease in voter participation; it will mean more burden and difficulties especially for the elderly and poor who do not use e-commerce and e-banking; it will mean one less avenue for communication.

The decline of the Post Office and perhaps its disappearance as an institution that Benjamin Franklin thought essential to our national existence, ultimately is a sign of the decline of the United States as a pathfinder of innovation and democracy.

Like the end of the space shuttle program and the lack of national will to replace it, the diminution of the Post Office means America's era as a beacon of civilization is ending.
