Boehner furious over Air Force One being used on campaign trips, forgets President named "Bush"

Who can forget Bush on Air Force One, and his FLEET of gas-guzzling SUVs that were used for CAMPAIGNING?

Oh, Boehner...why weren't you crying THEN?

Just now on MSNBC. The comment was "This subject comes up every four years."

he would STILL be flying air force one, as that is the official designation for ANY plane carrying the president.

nevermind that that would obviously be an unacceptable security risk.

presidential campaigns have long paid for the equivalent cost of flying for campaign trips. i recently heard on npr that the obama administration is actually paying MORE than previous administrations because they changed the formula to be based on the cost of comparable charter flight rather than a standard commercial flight.

It's cynical and maniacal.

So what if it's bullshit? I'll be getting the frothing emails from my freeper in-laws tomorrow screaming bloody murder about Obama and AF1.

Fox News won't correct it.

Mission accomplished.

The president whomever it may be should get to use his/her airplane. That's life. You become president and you get to fly around in Air Force One.

But they don't, so they have to make do with what's available. The weird thing is why the popular media think it's worth wasting oxygen on these nontroversies when there are plenty of other, real, issues to report.

If the nation was attacked while President Obama was on a campaign trip, I guess that he would just have to wait in line like everybody else to get a flight. These people are so far removed the reality of what Air Force One really is. It is a flying command center.

But getting back to her suggestion that following Bush's example would save taxpayer money. President Bush took 149 trips to Camp David, 77 visits to his Crawford ranch, and 11 trips to his father's Kennebunkport mansion. Since Air Force One reportedly cost $56,800 per hour to operate in 2004 (which Bush used to get to Crawford), and the plane can travel up to 630 miles per hour, it cost at least $259,657 to get the 2,880 miles to Crawford and back, each time Bush went, or roughly $20 million dollars just for taking the plane on the Crawford trips alone. Add in the cost of putting up Secret Service and other staff for the ranch trips, as well as the Kennebunkport and Camp David trips, and you get, well, a lot.

leave DC on a commercial flight? Without the football or the requisite staff and communication equipment to handle any number of international crises in the US sphere of influence? Maybe he should travel by Piper Cub!

Straw man argument. Flying by Air Force One is not a perk. It's part of Obama's job description.
