Baker raises money for dogs fighting cancer

He loves his job: Quality-control manager Homer waits for a sign from Dottie Schulte before sampling the latest batch of fresh-out-of-the-oven canine cookies at their home in Greeley, Colo. Schulte's dog biscuit business, Fidoughs, raises money for dog-related charities like Bark for Life.

GREELEY, Colo. —
Dottie Schulte brought Mozart, one of her Bernese Mountain dogs that were such a big part of her life, to a publicity event for Bark for Life, and she agreed with others who saw him that night: He didn't seem well.

"He's just overwhelmed," she said when people made that remark.

It was a big night for Mozart, after all. He was inaugurated as the face of Bark for Life in 2010, a new event that would, like Relay For Life, raise money for the American Cancer Society. The difference is Bark was designed to recognize the role dogs play as caregivers in the fight against cancer.

Mozart, however, didn't seem to recover from his big night, and a concerned Schulte took him in and discovered Mozart really wasn't himself. He had cancer. Less than a month after he became the face of Bark for Life, he was gone.

Schulte has baked dog cookies as a hobby for 15 years and even formed an LLC, Fidoughs, but if you want one reason why Schulte spends hours in the kitchen baking an oatmeal mix and topping each bone-shaped treat with vanilla almond bark and sprinkles, Mozart's it. Mozart is why Schulte is so passionate about Bark for Life and is one of its top fundraisers at more than $1,100 a year and a former chairwoman. Mozart is why she makes thousands of treats a year. Those treats look pretty good. But they're not for people. There's no time to bake for people. She likes the fact that she doesn't have to wash the bowl between batches.

"I don't bake human stuff," she said. "Are you kidding?"
