A momentary release of pressure away from the mostly fabricated-just-for-the-rubes partisan bickering that occurs the other 364(5) days of the year.
Where bitter rivals can let their hair down momentarily and hobnob together, without having to perform in front of the cameras for the dog and pony show known as The Washington Circus.
A tiny isle of civility, replete with the fabulous set of well heeled names of the day. A smile and a drink or two here and there, much needed, without the expectation to stand around and demagogue about things that they may or may not care about any given time.
To forget about the talking points of the day.
To have a bit of fun
Fun isn't all that bad, you know, even if we don't get to play.
Yes, of course, the rest of us are confined to the sidelines, still while to cope with whatever personal crises that have befallen us, not to sit with stars of stage, screen and print. But hasn't that always been the way?
I don't begrudge this momentary distraction of our betters tonight. This is a democracy, the people of this country have pretty much allowed this to happen.
But once this spectacle is over and the tuxes and gowns go back into their fabulously adorned walk-in closets, once the hair and make up reverts back to its stark and spartan form, the Circus starts up once again, we can all get back to expressing our frustration over the stagecraft known as American Politics.
The civility gone, like an ephemeral cloud.
The hackles will rise, the provocative words will be espoused and the game shall be afoot once more. You will have your pound of flesh and more I assure you, my friends, as surely as the sun will rise on the morrow.
For now in your own abode, take the cue from our betters by eating, drinking and making merry, in our own unsophisticated and pedestrian fashion and with what little we are left with.
It's not that hard to appreciate what little we have. We still have our dignity, right?
So, my friends, cohorts and even my detractors
Here's a toast to us, the little people.
Without us, being down here, they wouldn't be up there.

(30,252 posts)They praised the George W. Bush impersonator to no end, but the media outlets who didn't pretend that Colbert's skit never happened jumped up and down on him mercilessly.
That said, there is a lot of wisdom in what you just said. Well done.
