But I missed the memo somewhere on how one determines these various shades of gay.

Someone who acts a certain way is gay, and this is uproariously funny to publicly declare that they are gay and are further transvestites, as all gay men are apparently transvestites.

Do I now understand the joke?

have always defended and accepted a persons sexual orientation, no matter what it is. It is my opinion that Marcus is a gay man, be it any one of the above categories . Personally I don't care how he chooses to live his life, just don't preach dangerous ideology to others, because of your moral beliefs. Michelle Bachmann is a Dominionist, radical christian fundamentalism, and would be vehemently opposed to anyone that isn't heterosexual and Christlike according to her beliefs.

But just so I understand, you are able to remotely determine someone's orientation based on brief video footage and photographs because, like Bill Frist did with Terri Schiavo's condition, you have a finely developed professional gaydar operator's license.

Okay. So ergo, the man wears skirts, is "light in the loafers", "gay as a day in may", a pansy, etc. and it is funny to point this out.

You don't know if he is gay or not.

It is no different from playground taunting of that kid in the class whom others have decided is a "pansy".

How is implying Marcus Bachman wears pink slips a joke "about gays"?

Does the humor turn on how funny it is that, I guess, gay men wear women's clothes? Does it turn on the hilarity of calling a man gay who does not identify as such?

I totally get the humor. It happens in schools every day. I am just surprised it is okay among adults.

Is to make a joke about calling an effeminate man, who does not identify as gay, a cross dresser in a nationally televised event.

Since after all, we all know he's gay "as a daffodil", as noted above, and thus he should be made fun of.

Yes, Jimmy Kimmel is gay.

Only a closeted gay man would make a jole about another man being a closeted gay man.

It's all a consequence of the well known fact that gay men are just a mass of psychological issues for which the best treatment is public humiliation of some kind.

fun of Marcus. They both laughed and said that the joke was funny because Marcus Bachmann is so flamboyant and yet he runs a business that mostly uses gay conversion therapy on people. I think it is the fact that he is flamboyant, and a hypocrite (he claims to be helping people yet he is actually hurting them psychologically) that make him a target for ridicule. Whether or not Marcus Bachmann is gay he is a dangerous fool. And if you don't laugh at him you have to cry.

Having said that, I didn't like the joke, but to try and shame people by saying it's no different from bullying a child is, in my opinion, ridiculous. And I hate the shame game.

Okay, so, let's recap.

If someone sets your gaydar off, then making an after-dinner joke based on making fun of that person about being gay on national television is a fine thing to do.

It's especially funny when the person in question does not self identify as gay.

What makes the joke "funny" is calling Marcus Bachmann a transvestite.

And theres nothing more to it than that. And I don't care how Bachmann self identifies. That would insinuate that I believe being gay to be a choice and not a condition of genetic makeup.

The fact is, he spends his time trying to brainwash gay people into being straight by using religious tools and so called counseling. People have fucking killed themselves over that kind of shit. And he does it because he and his bigot wife want to push the notion that being gay is some kind of condition that needs fixed... a "condition" that he himself seems to have. Someone who engages in that sort of thing deserves to be called out for trying to pawn their own self hatred off on others, whether it be via humor or more serious means.
