i predict either the 40's group or 50's group the largest number. but, i am curious.
though, this may be one of the polls people do not want to vote in because of transparency. i am curious about that, also.
***edit: something else i like about this poll. an half hour and there are 101 vote already. that tells me there are more people on du, than what i was thinking. it has seemed slow of late, and i am thinking that use is down. but a lot of people not posting, are reading. that is nifty. ***

(146,281 posts)but DU's membership is older than many people think. Still, not many DUers take the time to vote in polls, so it won't really give an accurate result.

(29,322 posts)Noticing that at-least 97% so far are older than me and the fact you can see who votes was discouraging me. Feeling like people would look and say, "he doesn't know what he is talking about". They'd be correct as I imagine I will be a lot more intelligent than I am now when I'm in my 30's, 40's, 50's, etc. I'm smarter than I was 5 years ago but I wish I could apply that knowledge back then when I was better off. Anyways, DU has been a great learning experience, finding out many great things I never heard of. Learned more here than grade school, now if only someone could help me with math.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)this is what i thought. yours, from a younger perspective and others not wanting to be identified as older for those reasons. interesting, huh, lol. not necessarily more intelligent. that you have down. it is the wiser, and that is thru experience that i find. geeez, as you get older, you tend to forget all the bullshit that made you "intelligent". ah ha. so you may be at your peak there.
JonLP24
(29,322 posts)When referring to knowing what I know would have helped me respond to certain things in the past. Ha, I think I'm starting the forgetting period. A few months ago, just messing around, I decided to do to division problems on paper. I completely hit a well and could not figure out what I was supposed to do after getting the answer wrong numerous times. Eventually it came back to me, can't remember what I was doing wrong but I realized you figure out how many times the number goes into each top number going from left to right. Like 233/3 It goes into 2 0 times, 7 in 23. Write 7 on top, subtract 21 from 23 and continue from there.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)wait until you have kids and have to do all that stuff all over again. then a person really feels stupid, until they let it go, own it and embrace it. tutors.... are a parents friend.
simple math is very easy for me. i do it in my head, faster than hubby can do a calculator. my son has a fuzzy brain. couldnt do long division for anything in the world. sequential. he is not a sequential thinker. where he falls short. if he got out of the rhythm of how to do the problem, he could never find his way back. interesting how the different brains work.

(146,281 posts)Still, when you look at the vote count on most polls, and compare it to the number of active DUers, it's usually a small percentage. Lots of DUers just don't even open poll threads. It's still an interesting glimpse of DU's demographics. I remember seeing other polls like this on on DU2.
Gormy Cuss
(30,884 posts)and there's no way to know how the distribution of ages of the nonresponders differ from the respondents.
For example, it may be that 90% of the 61-70 crowd replied but only 10% of the 71-80 age group. It may also be that both groups responded proportionally to size of the universe of DUers.
Still, it's a great way to put ages on a bunch of DU names and a fun exercise.

He would probably be an easy person to get a long with but does or did(haven't seen him in years) have a bad side. I remember one time when I was in the bathtub and I couldn't remember what I did wrong but grabbed my head and banged it against the wall. There was one time he was sleeping on the couch and I guess I woke up as he came towards me, tried to grab my hair but it was cut short so it was effective so he settled for a slap. In fact when my parents divorced when I was 3 or 4, they had split custody and was originally supposed to live with him. My brother to my mom, it didn't last long at all as someone called police on him for spanking me in the Safeway parking lot. I guess spanking isn't wrong depending on who you asked but from what I gather it was very public event. I don't remember it, also don't remember anything about the trip I took from Colorado to Arizona but do remember first time I arrived in Phoenix.
Last time I saw him was 2003, he mentioned things like if Al Gore won we wouldn't be having these problems. There was a news report that I pointed out to him that Marilyn Musgrave (his represent ive at the time) wanted a Constitutional Amendment banning gay marriage. He said, "Good. It's disgusting." I was done after that, no desire to see him again.

(110,159 posts)in raising kids, ... there needs to be (for many of us) a little more structure, not to mention saving for retirement. once a certain age, a person can let go f a lot of concerns and focus on others. and the younger more liberal arent in a place where they have to concern themselves with certain issues, too. but will focus on others.

(8,556 posts)I assumed the mean age here was over 40, but it looks to be closer to 50, maybe even higher. It's noticeable too, especially in 'nostalgia' threads and also when posters write about personal experiences and reminisces.
I wonder what accounts for it? I would guess many things, but a big one is probably the political nature of the board. Younger people seem less likely to be registered to vote and to follow politics closely. Today's teens and 20-somethings are probably too busy with sites like reddit and the failblog to spend too much time posting about politics.
I also wonder if it has something to do with the liberal activism in the 60s-70s. Old habits die hard and not everyone was 'mugged by reality,' as it were . You also those who converted to liberalism later in life and have a lot of pent up liberalism they want to express. My grandfather was such a person.
Not sure how this fits in, but I noticed the other day that the 10 youngest House members are all Republicans. I don't think it means Generation Y is becoming more Republican - the opposite is true. Probably it's mostly a product of recent Republican gains in the house, which skews the newbies in their direction. Still, I did think of it after seeing this poll.

(8,636 posts)I realize this was not a "scientific poll;" but, Democratic Underground's age range does seem to be skewed to the middle age and older cohorts. We need some young people to provide some really new ideas and energy.
And we need to think about who will carry on! Sorry to have to tell you this gang, but we aren't immortal!

(8,554 posts)I was greatly surprised at the lack of youth we have here, now.
It seems that other polls we've had in the past showed a few more on the young side than this one does, tho us over-the-hillers really have always held the majority. It's actually disappointing to see, after all this time.
