And then towards the end where I was seeing a book I already gave a low score knowing it would not be the right answer. Kind of makes me sad to see that people are failing to enjoy the classics, I enjoy them because they give you an insight into society at that time period.

Man, I hated every page of that book.

I was expecting so much going into it and then I started...They went on and on and on.

I was so hoping the whale would just show up and take them all out at about page 400.

I hated it, too, and I read just about anything and everything - over 250 books last year alone. It ranks at the top of my "Never open this one again" list.

A 20 pg adventure story interleaved with 50 pages of social commentary and 450 of technical whaling manual. At Heart of Darkness length it would have been tedious but bearable. At Dombey and Son length as it is, it's excruciating.

books (although I printed copy of a play isn't a book in the accepted sense). Not everyone likes all works of literature. I have tried reading "Little Women" various times since I was a child, and can never get past the chapter where the girls act out Pilgrim's Progress. For me it's boring and stupid.

The very worst thing about those reviews is that for the most part they offer no analysis, perspective on exactly what the author of the review found lacking in the books.

The other thing is that these seem to be reviews by kids forced to read the book for school. I, who love to read, rarely enjoyed novels I had to read for high school, so I do sympathize to a large degree. Meanwhile, just saying you hate a book isn't useful to someone else trying to figure out if they should read it.
