Here's what the Angry Elizabeth Warren Left can't understand
NOBODY put you moonbats in charge of deciding who's a Democrat.
A Democrat is anyone who says they're a Democrat. Period. If Ted Cruz himself changed his affiliation to our party, without changing a single view, we should welcome him with open arms. Because Cruz wins elections. And just think: if ALL elected Republicans became Democrats, we'd handily win every election! Whatsamatta, Libs, don't wan't permanent control of government? So cut the crap and fall in line. Well, not a line per se, because that would smack of some sort of agreement on an organizational scheme. But you know what I mean. Regards, Third-Way Manny

88. No, they left the party because democratic ideals changed (See the small "d")
The Democratic Party was the party of slavery during the civil war and the party of racist segregation for a long after. Those racist southern Democrats were Democrats in their day.
There is no required ideology in the "Democratic Party of the United States." (Note the use of proper nouns). Democrats do share ideas about democracy. (Note the common noun again.) |

the Dem Party is to register and slap a D after their names?
Rush Limbaugh used to have his ditto heads register as Dems so they could mess up elections. Were they Democrats too? I'm trying to find out what my party stands for so excuse me if in my ignorance I once thought that this Party stood for something. I guess not? |

89. To join the Democratic Party (proper noun) they only need to register.
They would not share democratic ideology or ideals (note common noun).
What the party stands for is the shared ideology and ideals of democracy (fairness to all, equal rights enjoyed by all, individual liberty shared by all, a government that serves the needs of its citizens.) Most often, you can find some of this in the party platform. The Democratic Party rules about what it takes to be a member of the party and vote in a primary or run as a candidate are not what the party stands for. For instance, to me, Bernie Sanders pretty much embodies the democratic ideal. Bernie Sanders is not a member of the Democratic Party, so he is contemplating joining the party so he can run in the primary. I'd bet you share democratic ideology and ideals with Bernie Sanders and me. But he does not yet share a Membership in the Democratic Party. So, if I want to talk about what the Democratic Party stands for, I will talk about the shared ideals and ideologies of democracy. Words have meanings. |

108. I think we basically agree then. However to some people just the letter after a name is enough to
make them a Democrat. As you point out, Bernie is far closer to being what a Dem ought to be than many who currently are members of the party.
So then, the question is, should people vote for the one who is likely to do the most good for this country or stick to the 'letter' regardless of the likely outcome? |

87. I think you get the point. Of course Ted Cruz is an extreme example used to make
a point. The point as I see it, is that all Democrats are not equally holy. One needs to look deeper than the label. Anyone can acquire the label. In fact The Third Way is made up of Republicons that figured out they could get elected as long as they were progressive or at least seemed to be progressive on social issues. They could still advocate for capitalistic economic policies and neocon wars of aggression, which is really what they want.
When Arlen Specter joined the Democratic Party, he didn't change is ideology. But some vote for the label and not the person. |

15. lol Manny,
Look, I get the frustration. I really do.
In many ways the candidates all seem the same, and I agree that we need to push our party further to the left. But to compare what you may consider a Democratic Republican, for example let's say, oh Hillary Clinton, to Ted Cruz, is hyperbole. They are not in any way, shape of form, even close. So yes, let's push the party toward our goals, because yes, it is our party, not theirs. But this fall in line act, as if Democrats would fall in line with Ted Cruz if he put a D next to his name, is ridiculous. I know we need to entertain ourselves while we wait for the primary, but c'mon. |

Then Libya happened. Today's Democratic rank-and-file will, quite happily, support just about anyone and anything in the name of scoring points against the opposition. |

e-mail problems don't allow for that, because I feel really sh;tty about the problems this causes for our POTUS. First he has to defend his immigration decision in court., then he has to put Bibi in place without offending all of Israel, and now he has to defend his e-mails to the former SoS, since they were not secured apparently. Sorry, Manny, I don't mind Obama getting grey, but I hoped that his hair would not turn white yet, inspite of his efforts to sell us the TPP. |

91. Strawman argument. However, if your point is that certain people are NOT democrats and should not be called that....
...Who gets to decide? You? Which group here gets to decide the definition of Democrat and tell us who we should vote for because they are real democrats, not republicans in democratic clothing? Do we get to vote for this panel? Or will they, also, be picked for us because, clearly, any democrats urging for some party unity are too stupid to know they shouldn't vote for Ted Cruz if he's calling himself a Dem and should be led and directed by...?
That's what you're arguing for with this strawman argument. You're not arguing against genuine folk who are saying "this is a democrat who will win for us" but rather against a cartoon version of such people, a strawman version who you can simplify and make look alarming. If that cartoon were real, then maybe this argument would have validty. But the truth is, that's not what REAL people arguing that side are saying at all. Genuine people arguing the other side seem to be saying, so far as I can see, that we should vote for, say, Obama even though he didn't hold all our cherished wishes (like gay marriage—which he didn't advocate at first) because he, yes, will win, and when he does he will get some important, shared values of ours passed like healthcare or a judge on the supreme court who won't overturn Roe vs. Wade. Also, that he might be open to gay marriage eventually—or at least, not so against it that he will harm it's progression. They're arguing that this, in their opinion, is a better than picking someone with all those cherished values who might lose; which will leave us with none of those things and, worse, may lose us gains like Roe vs. Wade. I.e. We'd love to have it all in a president, but we'll take some instead of all rather than risk losing our place and ending up having to re-fight certain battles all over again (see voting rights. Why are we having to re-fight this battle? Because Republican presidents stacked the Supreme Court deck. Shall we let them do that again and have to re-fight more of these battles while not getting anything we want at all?). Arguing that there's hope for this democrat, who might be running and might win to be a good democrat (though maybe not the candidate of our dreams) is not the same as saying "vote for whoever will win no matter how crazy they are." Like a Ted Cruz if he named himself a democrat. |

118. Reminds me of an OP I wrote a while back...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023965304
Before we jump for joy that moderate Republicans are switching to the Dem Party...
take into consideration that it is only going to water down the Dem Party and move it even more to the right. The reason they're giving for switching is that they think the Tea Party is too crazy and has taken control of the party. It's not that they've had some epiphany and realize that what they believe is wrong and now they see that all the Dem Party stances are the right way to go. So I'm certainly not elated by it. So we'll be adding a bunch of Dinos who may or may not actually vote with the party, and who will make the party more right wing. Not necessarily a good thing. The one good thing I see is that it may get the moderates to really work to get their party back away from the extremists. But they've got a big fight since there are several conservative groups working to defeat moderate R's in the primaries and replace them with the crazies. Hopefully if the crazies win the primary, they don't go on to win the general election. |
