The Tennessee Legislature has sent to the governor legislation which orders teachers to exclusively and emphatically promote abstinence while banning anything deemed gateway sexual activity.
Drafted by a Christian group, the Family Action Council of Tennessee, the law allows parents to bring charges against a teacher for allegedly condoning gateway sexual activity.
Such groups as Planned Parenthood, which have offered sex education programs in schools, could face $500 fines in the Volunteer State.
The legislation is product of a Republican legislature elected in 2010. Gateway sexual activity means sexual contact encouraging an individual to engage in non-abstinent behavior, said State Rep. Jim Gotto, a Republican and chief sponsor of the legislation.
State Rep. Mike Stewart, a Democrat and opponent of the legislation, said that could include touching of clothing over the thighs as well as girls sitting in boys laps.

(27,787 posts)I went to a public high school in philly, and lots of catholic school girls rode the same bus to their school.
The bus was a city bus, not a school bus, and it was usually very crowded in the morning, and so lots of times, the girls would sit on our laps.
The shocks on the buses were terrible, which made for a very bumpy ride.
Good times. Good times.

(2,208 posts)...(or portion of it) is trying to promote a wave of teen pregnancies?
Because, that would be the inevitable result of this legislation.
These people really are that stupid, aren't they?
They really don't know how the world works and how the species functions, do they?
Sad...

(17,320 posts)I went to public schools during the 50's. I never heard one teacher discuss sex in any way except
in biology classes and that wasn't about human sexual behavior. There were elective courses on religion. I might point out that I went to school in a small town in Mississippi, not exactly a bastion of liberal thinking.
It appears that the right wing fundamentalist have gained lots of ground in political influence since the 50's and that's not good for America or the human race.

(758 posts)In what was a fairly progressive neighborhood. In health class, we studied STD's, and were encouraged to as questions anonymously, on paper. I asked the question that was most important to me, even then- "Can you get an STD by homosexual sex?"
Out teacher shoved it in the trash and said "No one here will have to worry about that"
In retrospect, he probably had no clue, but my point is, it didn't stop mme from having gay sex. It only kept me from having safe sex!
Gateway, indeed!
