(11,101 posts)You don't "consider" who's in the top 1%, they either are or they aren't. They are.

(27,461 posts)he has enough money stashed away so that no Romney for generations has any danger of falling into the 1%.

(5,420 posts)It's also how u use that money to control this country and the world in favor of the super rich and not caring how many of the rest of us u destroy on the way.
This is why some rich like Michael Moore are not really considered a 1% er even though he qualifys by income.

(169 posts)There's a definitive mathematical/financial cut-off mark that distinguishes the 1% from everyone else -- it's a tax structure thing, not a subjective thing.
Now, if the question is "are they out of touch" then some folks may consider THAT debatable. Not me, but some folks.

(50,232 posts)It is far from simply "a definitive mathematical/financial cut-off mark that distinguishes the 1% from everyone else". The mathematical/financial component is part of the equation, it is not THE equation, imo.
Another and equally, if not even more important, key component is how the 1% chooses to use their vast wealth. If they use it to fight against the rights of others in order to protect their privileges, if they use it and the power it brings to enrich themselves further at the expense of the poor and the middle class, etc, then they ARE the 1% being referenced.
If, on the other hand, they use their vast wealth and influence to fight for the rights of others, if they use their wealth and influence to try and narrow the gap between the wealthy and the poor and middle class then, imo, although they would qualify as being in the 1% financially, within the tax structure, they do NOT qualify when all factors are taken into consideration, again, imo.
