Jimmy Carter's failed Iran hostage rescue mission..

Did you know?

http://www.donhopkins.com/drupal/node/104

<snip>
8 helicopters, 6 C-130 transport planes, and 93 Delta force commandoes secretly invaded Iran. They were to rendezvous at a place in Iran they called Desert One, move out to another point called Desert Two, and then go on to Tehran to rescue the hostages. But Delta force never made it to Desert Two or Tehran. The mission was aborted after three of the eight helicopters failed, on the way to Desert One. The operation was a miserable failure, resulting in an accident that caused the loss of 8 American lives. Later investigation revealed a surprising level of negligence.

<snip>
At least three central figures in the Iran-Contra Scandal were involved with the Iranian hostage rescue mission: Secord, Hakim, an North.

General Richard Secord helped to organize the abortive rescue mission. After the first mission failed, he was the head of the planning group that eventually decided against another rescue attempt. Because the whereabouts of the hostages were unknown, the second rescue attempt (the October Surprise that the Reagan-Bush campaign was so worried about) never happened.

<snip>
Oliver North led a secret detachment to eastern Turkey. He was in the mother ship on the Turkish border awaiting the cue from Secord to fly into Teheran and rescue the hostages. [2] [25] After the first aborted rescue mission, he worked with Secord on a second rescue plan.
According to the October Surprise theory, Secord, North and Hakim did not intend Desert One to carry through. The miserable failure of Carter's Desert One rescue attempt may have been deliberate.

By soon to be exposed criminals - Secord and North. Traitors to the country. Still makes me mad.

I have a great deal of respect for Jimmy Carter. It pains me to see how badly he has been treated over the years.

Anyone that has a decent understanding of what happened knows that the cause of the problems had nothing to do with sabotage. It was operating in hostile conditions by people not trained in those conditions who were using equipment not designed for operations in those conditions.

I dislike the GOP operatives mentioned as much as anyone but the theory in the OP is total bullshit.

that you think a ridiculous premise and perhaps it is. However, we certainly know that Reagan et al DID ultimately negotiate for the hostages behind Carter's back and in that manner sabotaged Carter's efforts to free the hostages. So while the mission may not have been at issue in terms of sabotage, that does NOT negate the validity of the thread.

How come Carter was blamed for that failure but Obama cannot claim success.
I smell an attempted swiftboating from RW ex navy seals. This one will fail.

13. The NAVY choppers failed

The mission failed because the NAVY choppers were never intended to, or built to fly through sand storms at low altitude. Too many of them failed. There were not enough of them left to transport the troops needed to carry out the mission.
There may have been some rangers in turkey but most came out of BFE in southern Egypt.
I'm a retired Ranger and served with Delta at that time. Politics were not a factor for us. Politics were not involved in this mission. We really wanted to extract those American citizens. Military personnel do not follow politics, they follow orders.

That is the official version that I remember. I confess that I do not know the difference between Navy choppers and Army choppers. It's good to hear that the military personnel do not follow politics, even if they like to listen to Rush Limbaugh on Armed Forces Radio Network...
