No disrespect to the man, but it doesn't work all that well.

First of all, people who don't remember the past don't necessarily have to repeat it.

But more important, people who do remember the past repeat it all the damn time. In fact, people who have the most access to the past that is possible (budgets, researchers, and think tanks) still repeat the past anyway.

So I would suggest this alternative:

'The past is condemned to repeat itself, but if you want to remember it anyway, knock yourself out'
