Deficit? Meh, Mitt put his dog on the roof of his car! Unnecessary war? Fuck that, Ted Nugent pissed his pants! Keeping the Senate and winning back the House? BORRRRRING... Supreme Court? Yawn...

Yes, the media focuses on crap like dogs on cars and Ted Nugent; stuff that probably doesn't help us. BUT, when they talk about the RMoney's extravagant spending, overseas bank accounts, missing tax returns, and general excess, we need to thank them. These are pocketbook issues that everyone can understand.

plus where does stuff like this end? We could make the same comments about hollywood actors, directors, media people, politicians, blue or red, kidding ourselves that they are in touch with the common people because of the letter by their name. I don't buy, I'm sticking to the issues.

31. Guessing she isn't so stupid to have done this knowingly.

Someone asked if a gift (ick - whole other story if that is the case), I have to ask if she has a personal shopper (as many very wealthy do.) Surely she didn't know how much it cost - and how easily identifiable it was (per to determine cost) and the message it sends.

My entire career has been in academics or in nonprofits. While no longer the case, there have been times when this cost would have been more than my after tax income for a month. I have lived on that amount (all costs) for more than a month. And while I have lived on the financial edge, I know that others live on a riskier financial edge.

Or perhaps she thinks that middle income and lower income folks really should face further financial insecurity so that she can buy more 1K dollar shirts (per Mitt's support of the Ryan plan that on the one hand slashes safety net programs for those most in need, while at the same time giving even more tax breaks to wealthy individuals and corporations.

I start this post, because I have no sense of this woman, per who she is, so it doesn't feel fair to cast aspersions to intent. My generous view, is that she had no idea, and wasn't sending a big middle finger salute to much of America. That is due to my personal aversion to attacking the family members of politicians. That said - once a story is covered, the excuse works one time. After that, such exhibits show contempt.

Tue May 1, 2012, 10:42 PM

The clothing expectations are such bullshit: roll the sleeves up or down? Wear the bathing suit and go swimming (or sailboating) and get crucified? Get a famous designer to do your inaugural gown and it's a flop. Get your haircut at the expensive salon you trust or go to Great Clips and let the newbie stylist butcher your hair for a few weeks of photo ops....

I guess it's because I am NOT a fashionista that I hate seeing anyone pilloried over their clothing choices: expensive or not. Michelle Obama now wears a LOT of pricey stuff.

Face it - the 1% have access to great, expensive clothes. This just isn't an issue I can get excited over.

If she spends a grand on a tee, fine, but wear one that's not so easily identified. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

A lot of stuff the First Ladies wear is either given or loaned to them by designers. It's how they get attention to their designs. I'm willing to bet that's how Michelle got those expensive shoes that folks upthread are criticizing. IIRC, she had just been to Paris not long before those things showed up on her feet. Giving Michelle Obama a pair of $500 shoes is a cheaper way to advertise them than paying an ad agency.

We're talking about a T-shirt here, not formal wear.

Wearing a $990 dollar T-shirt, whether purchased with your own money or given as a gift, seems to me to be the height of extravagance. (SELLING a $990 T-shirt is disgusting in and of itself so could wearing one be any less revolting?). It harkens back to the days in America when the poor panhandled on the street and the rich payed for the extravagance of dining on horseback. It's a totally unnessessary indulgence.

How about buying a regular t-shirt and giving the rest of the money to a good cause? Disgusting.

My point is that if she were First Lady, she might not be running up the huge tab you asked us to imagine. I guess I was not clear about that. I'm not trying to defend her by any means. I'm just pointing out that things are different when it comes to how the First Lady obtains many of her expensive clothing items. She is not First Lady now, so yes, everything you say is right about her.

Nice try. Michelle Obama doesn't walk around wearing $1,000 t-shirts. If she did, we would have heard about it, and we would never hear the end of it. Michelle Obama has been complimented for the cheap price tags of much of her clothing. Ann Romney wearing a $1,000 t-shirt, is yet more proof of how out of touch her, and robot Willard are. They don't get it.

Apparently he believes that they are in the 1% (and therefore default evil) and automatically "out of touch" with the American people.

And that is probably the truth.

But Low-Do's house would seem to be made of glass, and he might want to watch where he throws those stones.

It seems Low-Do makes $2,000,000/year from MSNBC...

I wonder how many other Democrats and Progressives in the 1% (or even the 10%), would fall into the same trap?

There's plenty of real issues to beat the Romneys up for with out manufacturing things out of whole cloth.
