Edwards Prosecutor: Is there a reason you didn't tell the gov't that? Witness: You never asked.

Edwards refused to lie about affair under oath, ex-aide testifies

http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/05/03/11524495-edwards-refused-to-lie-about-affair-under-oath-ex-aide-testifies?lite

Updated at 7:10 p.m. ET: Prosecutors in John Edwards' campaign finance trial were thrown for a loop Thursday when a former aide testified that Edwards refused to lie under oath about his affair with Rielle Hunter.

(snip)

The disclosure appeared to surprise prosecutor David Harbach, who asked Kornblau, "Is there a reason you didn't tell the government about the affidavit?"

"Because you never asked," Kornblau responded.

(end snip)

Can the gov't prosecutors be more embarrassing than John Edwards? Stay tuned.

or that Edwards refused to sign them. Yes, it is part of their case that he lied to further his own campaign, not just to hide it from his family. This testimony puts a little crimp in that, because he refused to lie under oath (affadavits).

"And that was only the second major revelation Thursday.

Another former aide, John Davis, testified that Edwards scheduled a conference call in late 2007 to announce his withdrawal from the campaign, but his wife canceled the call even though she knew of the affair. Edwards ultimately dropped out of the race weeks later.

Davis said Edwards scheduled the call after a fight with his late wife, Elizabeth, in late 2007. But soon after, Elizabeth Edwards called a staff member to cancel the call, Davis said."

I don't think too kindly of Elizabeth's dogged pursuit of the White House while knowing that the campaign could blow up in ways that would damage Democrats horribly.

7. I believe Elizabeth Edwards was as ambitious as any political wife

She'd paid her dues as well with a lot of her own hard work and I'm guessing she was as ambitious as he was. I don't see anything to ding her about in this account actually. It serves to demonstrate (to me at least) that she wanted this as badly as he did. First Ladies have a lot of clout and I'm guessing she knew she was getting close to wielding an extraordinary amount of personal power. I'm thinking her mortality was pressing and she knew her time was limited.

So what that she's more like Hillary Clinton (in knowing about the affair(s?). That's not all bad. She decided to grit her teeth and press on.

....for the fact that (given the Karl Rove book of dirty tricks) the Kerry Edwards campaign would have blown sky high in spectacular fashion.

The Democratic Party would have been crippled because Elizabeth Edwards refused to allow John to drop out.

Don't get me wrong -- I was always on Elizabeth's side. But it was wrong to put ambitions before truth.

I mean, how could anyone NOT love John Edwards??

Sigh. In retrospect obviously the Kerry campaign knew all of this shit. It's incredible they took them on anyway. John Edwards, or Elizabeth, must have been unbelievably persuasive.
