On Trevor Noah

OK: I understand two things:

One: even though Jon was NOT the original host, no one wants to try and fill his shoes. If Samantha Bee did not leave to get her own shows, no doubt there would be lots of "Bee is no Jon" gripes. Jon became, despite himself, a historical figure as much as a comedian.

Two: Whoever did take the reins needed to be willing to offend people. Jon Oliver is doign great on HBO, but HBO let's their people say "FUCK" and does NOT have to worry about pissing off sponsors. Whoever walked in, be they an old hand like Denis Leary a brand new person, would need to know from the get go that things would be rough. Let's not factor in the fact that Fox will try their damnedest to make sure the Daily Show dies, because it landed the hardest punches, and exposed many authors that would not get the time of day. It sure does not help that Fox's attempts at humor are awful (ya think ya can get Dennis Miller to host an anti daily show and win? Please.)

However, the jokes shown frankly were dumb. Also, Trevor comes across as smarmy as hell, and not in the self deprecating way that Jon could. Jon knew he was just as much of the joke as anything, where Noah has the intellectual sanctimony that, sorry to say, reminds me of Dennis Miller.

And before people deal the race and gender cards, they could have brought in Larry Wilmore (who is kicking ass) or since Bee left, maybe even promoted Olivia Munn, or offered it to other lady comedians (ok, imagine Kathy Griffith or Whitney Cummings or even Rosie O Donnell at the wheel of the rig.) They could have offered it to on old friend of the show (I still think Denis Leary or Lewis Black would be ready on day one, since both of them have been on the show) However, the fact is, when anybody got picked, someone was going to say "it's time someone like ME got picked, dammit!) Of course, if they were really bold, they could have multiple "anchors", which ensures they had two speace to fill, plus a chance to do banter tyhat aprdoided the stupid banter anchors used to do.

All I can say is, I will give noah a chance, as frankly I thought no one could replace Kilborne.

Oh well.

Maybe Trevor Noah will turn out to be awesome--I've never seen his standup, although his three (!) appearances on the Daily Show didn't get rave reviews from what I've read--but he's been given an absolutely plum job and doesn't seem to have been vetted, and that seems weird.
