Tolerance? Who am I to tolerate you?

Acceptance? Who made me the doyen of what is "normal and what is "not normal" and gave me the right to "accept" what i classify as not normal?

We need a new word for this. How about "what the hell was I thinking"? It's long, but I think it captures the truth of the matter. Alternatively, "How could I be so stupid for so long?!?!"

On a good day I consider 2/3 of the people out there candidates for protective restraint. On a bad day it jumps to 90%.
If they don't hassle me, I don't hassle them.

Tolerance assumes the other party is in error but are still admitted to the community as a whole.

Acceptance is admitting to the same beliefs/values. Acceptance is easy, too easy; there's no real virtue in accepting those who agree with you.

It's called bigotry and it has no place in a decent civilized society.

that meant respecting everybody's right to be who they are. Only lately has it become synonymous with "put up with."

Sometimes English morphs in some pretty disheartening ways. This is one of them.

In fact, if you think everybody else's is better, doesn't that mean you should change?

Who are we to tolerate instead of accept others.

Think Mitt Romney. Who are we to merely tolerate another human being?

Yeah, this kind of attitude breaks down really, really quickly. We sit in judgment of more kinds of opinions than Baskin Robbins can conceive of. But ask that our opinions not only be tolerated, but at least accepted as equal. Even though we, obviously, don't reciprocate, because we know *our* opinions are superior.

It's merely a veiled way of saying, "Everybody should think like us because we're so right." (Now that we've gotten that little humility nonsense out of the way, let's continue on to our much deserved apotheosis.)

Good citizens and neighbors of Berkeley enjoy the commons, but bad people come from "outside of Berkeley" and engage in "the behavior" that scares, appalls, and grosses people out. It is not people that must be opposed, eradicated, and exterminated - it is "the behavior".
