Tom Cotton: Bombing Iran Would Take “Several Days,” Be Nothing Like Iraq War

Sen. Tom Cotton says bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities would take several days and be nothing like Iraq War.

The Arkansas Republican, who earlier this year upset Democrats and the White House by sending a letter warning the Iranian government to think twice about entering into a deal on its nuclear program with President Obama, said President Obama offered a “false choice” by saying it was his deal with Iran or war.

“This president has a bad habit of accusing other people of making false choices, but he presented the ultimate false choice last week when he said it’s either this deal or war,” the Arkansas Republican said on Family Research Council’s Washington Watch radio program Tuesday.

After six world powers and Iran agreed on a set of “parameters” for the negotiating of a final nuclear deal, President Obama said the United States would be blamed and the “path to conflict” would widen if Congress killed the Iran deal.

have over 70 nuclear sites. It would take more than a "few days" to hit that many and some of them are hundreds of feet below ground.

Iran would be a much powerful foe than was Iraq.

What qualifies Cotton to suggest such a far reaching political and military move?

Pres. Obama will never willingly bomb Iran.

I suppose Bibi could provoke a conflict by unilaterally striking some Iranian facilities.

If Iran retaliated against Israel, then Obama might feel compelled to get involved.

If the U.S. bombed Iran, and I were Iran, I would consider invading Iraq, taking Baghdad and making it an Iranian protectorate -- what in the world could the U.S. do about that? What a huge blow to the U.S. that would be!

Cotton and anybody else talking about engaging Iran militarily is an idiot.

This really is World War III kind of stuff.

China is an Iranian ally and is buying lots of their oil. I don't think they will sit idly by. Russia has also helped Iran and is no friend of the US or Israel. Both could give Iran a nuke if they so desired. And help militarily, especially if Israel and the US become Pariah nations with wars of aggression against Iran.

China wants to increase its imports of Iranian oil.

A military strike would have the exact opposite effect of its goal -- it would prove one and for all to all the Iranians (not just the hardliners) of the necessity to actually produce their own nuclear weapons.

A strike would collapse any rational for a sanctions regime and you would likely see most of the world's nations complete forego any adherence to sanctions.

And, of course, a military strike would immediately give Iran the right to self defense and the freedom to pursue whatever retaliatory measures it thought prudent.

By the way, I'll include Sen Schumer and any of the other Democrats who are bucking Pres. Obama on this deal -- they are all idiots if they think they can get a better deal through threats and bluster.

Iran has some pretty sophisticated air defense systems. All it would take is for them to shoot down one plane, capture the pilot, parade him on the evening news, and suddenly our very quick, easy campaign has escalated into something more serious. This is to say nothing about the incredible influence Iran has in Iraq right now, where we are currently trying to wipe out ISIS.

Oh, and if Iran got a lucky shot on an F-22 or one of our stealth planes (al la Serbia 1999), well, look to see that technology in Iranian, Chinese, and Russian planes in a few years.

Bottom line: Bombing Iran=VERY BAD IDEA!!!!!!!

That's what Rumsfeld said when Cheney (dba Bush) invaded Iraq.

Republicans love starting armed conflicts with people they think won't shoot back. Iran would shoot back.

Plus, any armed attack on Iran would eliminate in one second the huge dissident movement inside Iran whose most cherished foreign policy goal is rapprochement with us.

For someone reputed to be intelligent, Tom Cotton isn't very smart.

From Dana Bash
CNN Washington Bureau
Thursday, January 2, 2003 Posted: 9:08 AM EST (1408 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The White House is downplaying published reports of an estimated $50 billion to $60 billion price tag for a war with Iraq, saying it is "impossible" to estimate the cost at this time.

White House Office of Management and Budget Director Mitch Daniels told The New York Times in an interview published Tuesday that such a conflict could cost $50 billion to $60 billion -- the price tag of the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

But Trent Duffy, an OMB spokesman, said Daniels did not intend to imply in the Times interview that $50 billion to $60 billion was a hard White House estimate.

"He said it could -- could -- be $60 billion," Duffy said. "It is impossible to know what any military campaign would ultimately cost. The only cost estimate we know of in this arena is the Persian Gulf War, and that was a $60 billion event."

Countries with significant nukes tend to like Iran because that's where they get their oil. Bombing Iran could start WWIII.
