https://firstlook.org/theintercept/2015/04/08/how-st-louis-police-robbed-my-family/On a late spring evening eight years ago, police pulled over my mothers 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora, in the suburb of St. Ann, Missouri, as she raced to pick up a relative from St. Louiss Lambert International Airport. Do you know why I stopped you? the officer asked. No I dont, my mother answered. The police charged her with speeding, but she did not receive a mere ticket. Instead, an officer ran my mothers name and told her that since she had failed to appear in court for driving without a license, there was a six-year-old warrant out for her arrest. I just started crying. I couldnt believe it. The police arrested my mother and hauled her off to St. Louis County Jail, where authorities eventually allowed her one phone call, which she placed to my stepfather. He said, shaking his head, I was surprised because I knew she didnt have no warrants.
St. Ann is one of the more notorious cities in the county when it comes to traffic violations and, in my mothers case, the citys finest, quite simply, fucked up. As it was, my mother had no warrant; the police confused her with another woman who shared her name sans the middle initial.
She would go on to spend two nights in jail, pay $1,000 in fines that she did not owe, and plead guilty to the crimes of the other woman. She paid a devastating price, financially and emotionally, for the racist and classist policing described in last months Justice Department report on the tumult in Missouri. The 102-page document details the physical and economic terror inflicted upon the poor and black residents of Ferguson, Missouri. The report echoed the torrent of criticism that residents have long lodged at the citys overseers. But, as my mothers experience helps illustrate, the injustices cataloged by the investigation are not confined to one tiny Midwestern suburb. Ferguson is emblematic of how municipalities in the St. Louis region, and across the country, operate as carceral, mob-like states that view and treat poor black people as cash cows.

(38,958 posts)Are not the St. Louis Police. St. Ann is a municipality within St. Louis County. St. Louis City is a separate county unto itself.
This incident while unacceptable and tragic should focus on those who commuted the injustice.

(7,670 posts)county. Fuck, I lived in Lakeshire, ever heard of it? Its a "city" off of Tesson Ferry, quite literally 3 neighborhoods, its city hall was just another house, which it shared with its municipal court, also police station. But there is one thing they do have, a police force, that spends all day and night pointing radar guns up and down Tesson Ferry. Also had to pay a city tax on utilities. They provided NONE of these utilities.
Hell, now I live in Affton, which isn't even a city, just a census zone in unincorporated St. Louis county, and at least it has its own effing school district.
Doesn't help that people use the names St. Louis and their local city interchangeably when addressing things here, even on the mail.

(18,101 posts)They'd stopped me a few times back in the day. They were okay. Nothing like St. George was.
Humanist_Activist
(7,670 posts)I think that was all of them.
Some cities I just avoid if I can't help it, and it has little to do with the neighborhood, but rather the cops.

(38,958 posts)Grew up in Velda Village. The barber shop eventually became city hall and the court house. The police force (1 car and I think 2 guys) were really just a radar trap on Lucas & Hunt.

(7,670 posts)I either grew up out in the country or the sticks. Never mind its a suburbia that looked not that different from Florissant.

(38,958 posts)the expansion of Old Town Donuts! A true Florissant tradition and the best donuts on the planet.

(38,958 posts)but, i don't get to Maplewood much. Drive past it commuting, but then I drive past Old Town every day doing that as well.

(7,670 posts)It helps that my fiancee is friends with the lady who owns Traveling Tea. The only problem with Strange Donuts is there strange hours, damn near every time we go there, they are closed, because they do things the old fashioned way, they make the donuts that day and when they sell out, they close the doors. Expect a line when going too.
That reminds me, went to Ted Drewes yesterday, and there was a fucking line, at 2 pm. Not a big one, but that place is never deserted.

Nice try at hijacking a thread, but what you desperately want people to believe and what that post is implying has nothing to do with each other.
And of course you know that.
EDIT - nice sneaky edit there PB! Yes anyone can go to that link and see you are lying about what my post in this thread says and what you want people to believe you are guessing what my brain is thinking at the time!
Seriously, how desperate are you to try and pretend you can read my mind in this thread? Shameful, but hey it is YOU so SOP.

(2,903 posts)That small subdivision is nothing but huge mansions in a gated area. They wanted everything their own way so they incorporated.
If you recall last year the woman who stabbed her husband to death then this year got off with probation (her attorney literally said that the hubby just fell on her knife) - they lived in Country Life Acres. Lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Look up the name Mullinex in the STL Post

(34,845 posts)Just kidding. It's long past time to incorporate the counties into the city but I think too many people like their little fiefdoms.
I'm in unincorporated Creve Coeur, btw.

(119 posts)I lived just outside of Bella Villa, it is almost as bad as the famous St. George was. I want no part of the city of St.L. Been there, played that game.

(34,845 posts)He'd pull you over for not using two hands on the wheel! I hear you, though. Once my daughters are away in college, I think I'll simply find someplace else to inhabit for a while. Missouri in general is dull and uneven.

(18,101 posts)I'd rather deal with City cops, bar none.
Humanist_Activist
(7,670 posts)but I also live less than a mile from St. Louis city limits. But its also right outside south city, not north city. I wouldn't be opposed to a merger that made me a resident of the city, where I live now, there are practically no perks, hell, signing up to any of the nearby dog parks is up to 70 bucks, where for a resident of the various cities, its less than half, that's one perk I can think of off the top of my head.

(65,616 posts)The area I live in now, use to be that way in the 1980s and 90s. Almost every small down was hostile toward minorities or a speed trap for city hall.
