2015 Legislators Are Coming for Sex Ed… Again

Care2 Causes

Often, when lawmakers are busy proposing and passing new laws, you will hear them argue that it is “for the sake of the kids.” The fight over Common Core or private school vouchers is allegedly about ensuring our children have the best futures. Blocking health care reform and Medicaid expansion is supposed to be about making certain we don’t bankrupt the country. Cutting Social Security is really about making the fund last until the newest generation is grown up, Republicans say. And war? Well, that’s just protecting our children at home by fighting terrorists abroad.

That “protect our children even if it hurts them” attitude is showing in a big way in this year’s state based reproductive rights legislation. One of the biggest ways that teens and minors are being targeted is via changes in sex ed curriculum. But under the guise of parental choice and protection, they are even more likely than ever to have their own health put at risk.

The most glaring example of anti-sex ed legislation has recently popped up in North Carolina, where lawmakers are introducing a bill that says that Plan B does not need to be discussed in a school’s sex ed program. According to bill sponsor Rep. Chris Whitmire, R-Transylvania, Plan B is a ‘life-ending drug’ that can cause spontaneous abortion,” and he “doesn’t want North Carolina students to know anything about it.”
