My son just walked up to me while I was cooking dinner and said, "Mom, did you see the video of the guy who was shot 8 times by a cop?"

I asked if he was talking about the one in South Carolina and he said yes.

Then the next words out of his mouth?

"The cop planted evidence and faked his report. Mom, someone has to be pretty brave to catch something like this on video. Which makes me wonder...."

"Yes?"

"This kind of stuff probably happens way more than people think it does, doesn't it?"

But I wouldn't discount what conclusions a young person can make and be absolutely correct. You son sounds like a well adjusted young man who pays attention to the world around him and engages in critical thinking. You should be prod. You can't protect him from the world which encroaches upon every aspect of our being... it is the human condition, much as you would like to have it be a positive experience.
